FINAL RANKINGS

1. Don't Leave Me - The Magnificents - 30
2. Lucky Guy - Mellows - 28

3. Talking Off The Wall - Eddie Bond - 22
4. Come Over Here - Royal Sons - 20

Results were clear as the top 2 had plenty of more points than the bottom 2. Carl's Mags win the group with Mark's Mellows not far behind in second, so they both go to the SWEET 16. Steve's Eddie Bond and Rick's Royal Sons are out.

I must say, this was a good month for me, because I discovered SEVEN
good records here that I'd never heard before--and TWO of them (Mellows
and Magnificents) were in today's group.

Well, Rick took a big gamble with his all-gospel lineup. Good for him.
Personally, I like "Lost In Sin" (the "Peace Of Mind" clone) a lot and
wish it had progressed, but it's hard for people to get past the, shall
we say, plagiarism and actually hear the top-notch singing.

Yes, "people" does include me. I'm a people, we all are.

Speak for yourself. The fact that it took from another record is irrelevant to me in judging its worthiness. In fact, there's MORE of a chance I am gonna like it when it sounds like another record that I really like.

And in this case, what's coming out of the speakers is an imitation of a
Spaniels record. Unless you've never *heard* the Spaniels record, it is
impossible to unhear it when you listen to "Lost In Sin."
I don't listen to all these cover records you've been posting links to
lately, but are you claiming that you're not comparing them to the
originals? If so, you're either lying or deluding yourself.

Actually, the 2 covers of "Shake, Rattler And Roll" are both done in the Haley style, so I am certainly not comparing them to the original.

And unlike you folks, if I am comparing them to another version it is in no way a negative thing. I am hoping that the covers are similar and maybe better than the original, as in the case of "Why Don't You Write Me" by the Jacks. The closer that the cover is bale to sound to an original that I already like, the better, as far as I am concerned. The fact that one or the other came first is not relevant to which one I like better. Speaking of "Why Don't You Write Me," it's an exact copy of the Feathers record, only produced and sung better, which is EXACTLY what "ALL THAT MATTERS IS WHAT'S COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS" means. With the way the rest of you think, you should all be saying that the Feathers version is better because the Jacks are just imitating it.

There are lots of covers that I like better besides that Jacks hit that I mentioned. There's also another record by the same group, "Stranded In The Jungle," which is better by far than the Jayhawks original. "You Cheated" is much better by the Shields than the Slades original. "Baby Let's Play House" is better by Elvis than the original. "Poison Ivy" is a little better by Willie Egan than the Willie Mabon original. "All Shook Up" by Presley is far better than the David Hill original. "Adorable" by the Drifters is better than the Colts version. "Rave On" is better by Buddy Holly than the Sonny West original. "Crying In The Chapel" and "Write And Tell Me Why" are both much better by the Orioles than in the Darrell Glenn originals. There are also many examples of this from later days, like "Lady Marmalade" by Labelle being better than the Eleventh Hour original, or "Shambala" by Three Dog Night being better than the BW Stevenson original, which I know that you agree with.

So you guys all have selective use of this "it's an imitation" rule. If you like the cover or remake better you ignore the rule. If you prefer the original version, then you cite the rule.

You're once again venturing into the absurd. No one automatically prefers the originals to the covers. The "rule" is simply that covers lose points. They can still be the preferred versions for a myriad of reasons.

If what you say is true, it should be no problem to find examples of this. On the other hand, if you can't find an example of this, then I must conclude that it's just what you are saying, but not what you are actually doing.

Which version of "Why Don't You Write Me" do you prefer, Feathers or Jacks, and if it's Jacks, you must think that there's a big difference if the Jacks can overcome the penalty it gets for being a cover, no?

In the case of "Lost In Sin," Bill, were you comparing it to "Peace Of
Mind?" To me, it lost points for changing the lyrics, but I still liked it.
