PEREZ “PREZ" PRADO (RCA Victor 20-5965; 47-5965)

‘CHERRY PINK AND APPLE BLOSSOM WHITE” (3:02) [Chappell ASCAP—Rosa]
One of the biggest names in the mambo field is Perez “Prez” Prado. His organization has probably had more to do with making the mambo what it is today than any other group. He was also one of the first to put the “ugh” in the mambo. In the past few years, Prez has come up with some big mambo waxings, but his latest is definitely his greatest.. It’s an absolutely beautiful number called “Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White” and its commercial enough to be an all out pop smash. We fell in love with the arrangement and the fabulous Billy Regis trumpet work which reminds us of Harry James’ technique. It’s the most fascinating mambo we’ve ever heard. Prado,
whose band co-stars with Jane Russell in the upcoming pic “Under Water,” performs this tune in the flick.

“MARIA ELENA” (2:49) [Peer International BMI—Prado]
Flip is a pretty rhumba dubbed “Maria Elena.” Top half is a long-shot, but we feel it has the goods and can make the grade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASE BOX R&B SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

THE CASHMERES (Mercury 70501)

“MY SENTIMENTAL HEART” (2:30) [Drexall BMI—Kirkland, Otis]
The Cashmeres might have a hit in their first offering. “My Sentimental Heart” is a slow tempo pretty on which the boys, with lead singer carrying the ball, chant a powerful piece of wax. The lead sings with feeling and styling. Good deck that could make for the charts with the proper exposure.

“YES, YES, YES” (2:15) [Munson BMI—Lee Samson]
The flip, “Yes, Yes, Yes,” is a beaty item with the lads shouting out a rocker. The deck moves at a smart pace that should have the kids hopping. Good juke box item. A solid effort, but direct action should take place on the “Sentimental” side.

In my neighborhood we learned dancing in this order, the fox trot, the mambo,
the cha-cha (just a mambo with a couple of extra steps thrown in), the lindy,
and finally the "slow dance" (which was just the fox trot with a more sensual
proximity) and thus our adolescence passed. What about the twist? Made no
impact on us. We just kept closing proximity with the slow dance.

Oh, yeah, what I was about to say before nostalgia warmed my heart, was that
CP&APW was absolutely my favorite mambo record at the time, and still is even
though I no longer mambo. That grinding bass horn sound that comes in
periodically is one of the greatest instrumental hooks ever.

Over here this memorable instrumentalk that I always liked by Prado
(yes,it makes my instrumental favorites list!) got to #1 in TWO
different versions. As well as Prado's version that topped the UK
chart for 2 weeks in Aprl/May 1955 it was also at the top for 4 weeks
in May/June in a local trumpet version by our own Eddie Calvert (of
"Oh Mein Papa" fame)
