I don't know about that. Becker & Fagen were both very funny and self-deprecating. Fagen appeared on Paul Shaffer's channel a few years back, running his keyboard through an MXR Phase 90 as always, and came across as surprisingly humble. They demanded high standards from their players, of course, and the results speak for themselves.

In this particular case ("Only a Fool Would Say That") they were mocking Lennon's utopian vision in "Imagine." I'm cool with the mockery. We all know Lennon himself didn't aspire to any such dream.

I'm not convinced this song was written specifically about Lennon, first
I've ever heard of it.

"Unhand that gun begone" referring to John? Really?

Sounds like this guy heard the first four words of the song, had an
article idea then tried to fit a square block into circle.
