JAN 28, 1956

LES BAXTER ORCH. (Capitol 3336; F-3336)

https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/50s/1956/CB-1956-01-28.pdf

“POOR PEOPLE OF PARIS” (2:24) [Reg. Connelly ASCAP—Monnot]
The Capitol label, currently riding high with “Lisbon Antigua” an instrumental with a delightful European flavor, comes up with another fascinating instrumental item that could be just as big. An imaginative, melodic novelty titled “Poor People Of Paris” glowingly presented by the chorus
and orchestra directed by Les Baxter. The tune dances with that refreshing Parisian lightheartedness that has made France’s music so popular. It’s a joyous affair jam-packed with catchy melodies that make instrumentals hits.

“HELEN OF TROY THEME” (2:47) [Harms ASCAP—Steiner]
Flip is the beautiful title theme from the film “Helen Of Troy”. A lush and dreamy affair, that should grow in popularity as the film hits the local theatres. Top half looks and sounds like another smash.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOYD BENNETT & HIS ROCKETS (King 4874; 45-4874)

B+ “PARTNERS FOR LIFE” (2:18) [Wemar BMI—Kardon, Gordon]
Boyd Bennett handles the vocal chores and his Rockets accompany on a lovely new fish-beat ballad. A change of pace from “Seventeen” and “Flat Top.” Side comes off as a winner. Should make big noise. Teensters will welcome this commercial, slow-tempo Bennett release.

B “RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER” (2:29) [Jay & Cee BMI—Singleton, McCoy]
Big Moe takes over the vocal duties on this rockin’ toe- tapper. Potent piece of rhythm material.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE ORIOLES (Jubilee 5231; 45-5231)

B “DON’T GO TO STRANGERS”(2:19) [Jefferson ASCAP—Evans, Mann, Kent]
A beautiful ballad that’s making noise in scattered territories, is attractively styled by the Orioles. Pretty group treatment.

C+ “ANGEL” (2:11) [Benell BMI—Holeman, Russell]
A pretty interpretation of a lush ballad. Effective vocaling sells the song..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASH BOX * AWARD O THE WEEK*

FRANKIE LYMON and THE TEENAGERS (Gee 1002)

“WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE” (2:40) [Patricia BMI—Lymon, Santiago, Goldner]
Young Frankie Lymon, apparently never heard that the entertainment biz is the toughest and that one suffers many years before “comes the dawn.” The first crack out of the box Frankie and The Teenagers come up with a tremendous piece of material, “Why Do Fools Fall In Love”, a middle beat rhythm item with a melody that grips. The deck has, in addition, a wonderful
vocal treatment. Everything is going for this etching, and if it doesn’t make it big in both pop and r & b, we miss our mark by miles.

“PLEASE BE MINE” (2:44) [Kahl BMI—Lymon, Santiago, Goldner]
The coupling, “Please Be Mine”, is a blues ballad, touchingly performed by the fledgling group. It is an excellent side, but we’ll string along with “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” for smash money.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GUITAR SLIM (Specialty 569)

B+ “YOU GIVE ME NOTHIN’ BUT THE BLUES” (2:14) [Venice BMI—M. Longmire]
Guitar Slim offers a strong down home blues of a middle beat. Slim wails his dejection caused by his baby who makes him so miserable. Ok wax coupled with the drawing power of Guitar Slim should give this deck a tidy sale.

B+ “SUM’THIN’ TO REMEMBERYOU BY” (2:42) [Venice BMI—E. Jones]
Slow beat weeper chanted by Slim. Another strong offering. Similar comments..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FATS DOMINO (Imperial 5375)

“DON’T BLAME IT ON ME” (2:29) [Reeve Music—Domino, Bartholomew]
Fats Domino, following closely in the vein of his recent hits, comes up with another, “Don’t Blame It On Me”, that should find a ready acceptance among the r & b faithful and the new audience he has built in the pop field. It is a melodic rhythm piece with a middle beat, offered in the now proven style of Fats. Deck should find a ready market.

“BO WEEVIL” (2:00) [Reeve Music—Domino, Bartholomew]
The flip, “Bo Weevil”, is an unusual item for the bluesman. The ditty is a mixture of country and western, honky tonk, Neapolitan flavoring, and Fats chanting. A strong two-sider, with an edge to “Don’t Blame It On Me”.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JOE WEAVER (Fortune 825)

“IT MUST BE LOVE” (2:15) [Trianon BMI—Joe Weaver]
Joe Weaver chants a groovey quick beat. Deck moves well and provides an en- joyable two minutes of listening.

“BABY, I LOVE YOU SO” (3:00) [Trianon BMI—Joe Weaver]
A gimmicked sound, a weird arrangement and strong wailing effort by Weaver, gives this middle beat blues a great chance to break through. Deck is unusual and deserves your attention. Watch it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASH BOX RHYTHM & BLUES SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

THE TEEN QUEENS (RPM 453)

“EDDIE MY LOVE” (2:53) [Modem BMI—Collins, Davis, Ling]
Here’s a sleeper side that has all the qualifications. It is a tuneful ditty sweetly sung by the fem group. A lilting tidbit, it sways with a gentle rhythm that captivates. “Eddie My Love,” if given the necessary exposure, can develop into a strong money maker. Keep close tabs on this side.

“JUST GOOFED” (2:35) [Modem BMI—Collins, Davis, Ling]
The flip, “Just Goofed,” is rocking jump, effectively chanted. The girls blend smartly for an easy to take sound coupled with rhythmic teamwork. However, it is a onesider, “Eddie My Love.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FERLIN HUSKEY (Capitol 3316; F3316)

B+ “SLOW DOWN BROTHER” (2:16) [Milene ASCAP—F. Rose, H. Heath]
Ferlin Huskey comes up with a most inviting reading of an up tempo moralizer that could bust through for a big hit. His Hush Puppies back the chanter in stellar style.

B+ “SINFUL SECRET” (2:23) [Central BMI—J.Carter] On the under
half Huskey pours his heart out on a touching, middle beat, crying towel item. Powerful coupler for the ops and dealers.

I'm wondering if Cashbox ever published a negative review, or are you picking
out the cream of the crop? And if they did pan some records, did they ever pan
what would now be considered a classic of the era?
