Geoff Emerick explains that, once John, Paul and George had agreed upon trading solos on "The End," Lennon for once asked Yoko to stay behind while he entered the studio with the others. Yoko looked stunned and hurt. Emerick continues:

It was almost as if [John] knew that she would put a damper on things and spoil the atmosphere if she were in the studio with them. Something inside told John that to get this to work, he needed to be doing it with just Paul and George, that it would be better for Yoko to not be at his side this one time. Maybe that was the reason, or perhaps it was because on some unconscious level they had decided to suspend their egos for the sake of the music, but for the hour or so that it took them to play those solos, all the bad blood, all the fighting, all the crap that had gone down between the three former friends was forgotten. John, Paul and George looked like they had gone back in time, like they were kids again, playing together for the sheer enjoyment of it. More than anything, they reminded me of gunslingers, with their guitars strapped on, looks of steely-eyed resolve, determined to outdo one another. Yet there was no animosity, no tension at all -- you could tell that they were simply having fun.

While they were practicing, I took great care to craft a different, distinctive sound for each Beatle, so that it would be apparent that it was three individuals playing and not just one person playing an extended solo. They were each playing a different model guitar through a different type of amplifier, so it wasn't all that difficult to achieve. I had Mal [Evans] line the three amps up in a row -- there was no need for a great deal of separation because they were all going to be recorded on a single track. Because there was little overlap between each two-bar solo, I knew that I could balance the levels afterward simply by moving one fader.

Incredibly, after just a brief period of rehearsal, they nailed it in a single take. When it was over, there was no backslapping or hugging -- the Beatles rarely expressed themselves physically like that -- but there were lots of broad grins. It was a heartwarming moment -- one of the rare times I could say that in recent months -- and I made a point of congradulating each of them when they came into the control room to have a listen. I was so blown away by Harrison's playing in particular that I made a point of saying "That was really brilliant" when he walked through the door. George looked a bit surprised, but he gave me a nod and a gracious thank-you. It was one of the few times that I felt I had connected on a personal level with him.

Which proves that none of them were great guitarists who had their own distinctive style. Otherwise he would not have had to take "great care to craft a different, distinctive sound for each Beatle." Just average guitarists among all of the guitarists of that era. Shit, George even had to bring Clapton in because he could not play his own composition (Weeps) correctly.

You're not making sense. Emerick gave each guy a different guitar sound -- therefore they were average guitarists? He's talking literally about the *sounds* that were being recorded. The guys' technical ability is a different subject.

It doesn't follow either that Harrison couldn't play his own song (WMGGW) "correctly." Presumably Harrison believed Clapton could craft a better solo.. If Clapton had declined the offer, do you really imagine that a Harrison solo would have been "incorrect"?

I didn't say that "members of a music forum" would know what "the Beatles Three Guitar Battle" is.

I said that every Beatles fan I know is aware that all three guys take turns playing solos on "The End."

The guys in the Beatles thread are all Beatles fans, as am I, and so far none of us ever heard of it.

Yes, if they were great guitarists they wouldn't need help from the engineer so that listeners would be able to distinguish that there were 3 different guys playing that sol. Everybody would know right away because each of them would have their own distinctive style without any studio tricks.

> It doesn't follow either that Harrison couldn't play his own song (WMGGW) "correctly." Presumably Harrison believed Clapton could craft a better solo. If Clapton had declined the offer, do you really imagine that a Harrison solo would have been "incorrect"?

No, he would have asked someone else, like Page, or Beck, until he found a great guitarist who said yes.

The song, as you are aware, is actually called "The End."

Suppose, in any event, that these people aren't aware of the guitar solos in that song. All that means is that they are ignorant of the issue. Are you trying to get me to take pity on them?

I've got a corpulent, illiterate neighbor who stumbled over last week to tell me that he considered Putin "savvy" and "smart," and that the U.S. should not be concerned about Ukraine.

This is a person who spent his whole life making accusations of "communism" and "socialism" against anyone he didn't like. He's forgotten all this now in his eagerness to parrot Trump and Tucker Carlson.

I tried to tell my rustic acquaintance about Putin's ugly history -- his invasions, his use of political assassination, etc. He said that he didn't know anything about any of that. I suggested that he inform himself and moved on.

Well, he came ambling back the other day to tell me that his buddies from the Elks Club didn't know anything about Putin's history, either.

It wasn't clear to me what sort of impression he was trying to make. The only thing I came away with is that my fat neighbor's buddies are as stupid and ignorant as he is.

No, I am showing that this thing is nowhere near as famous as you guys think.

I'm not surveying morons in the street like your asshole neighbor. I'm surveying hard core Beatles fans who know every song they ever released, but somehow never heard of this supposed thing that Geoff claimed was...

one of the most epic 3-way guitar duels in rock history !

Only one of the most memorable Beatles moments ever. And right up there
in all of modern music.
