THE CHANTELS (End 1030)

“CONGRATULATIONS” [Real Gone BMI—Andrews, Dasher]
The Chantels, who’ve been clicking in both the pop and R&B field with their follow up records to their initial hit “Maybe”, should have another strong money-maker in both markets with this coupling. “Congratulations” is a slow tear jerker that has a gal congratulating her ex beau (on the phone) on his new love affair. Exciting sound and arrangement.

“IF YOU TRY” [Real Gone BMI—Nilson]
The group’s lead voice excells again on the companion piece, “If You Try”. Dramatic rock- a-ballad romancer. Hot two-sider.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MICKEY KATZ (Capitol 4037)

B+ “THE KNISH DOCTOR” [Monarch BMI—Bagdasarian]
Comic Mickey Katz is at his funniest as he offers a Yiddish-English parody on one of the year’s biggest hits “Witch Doctor”. The dialog is just hilarious and should win mass approval in the market at which it’s aimed. Last line of this side is one of the funniest we’ve heard on wax to date.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY97lVo9W7E

C+ “POIPLE KISHKE EATER” v"r [Cordial BMI—Wooley]
Excellent take off on another smash novelty.

The Cash Box Award o’ the Week

CHUCK BERRY (Chess 1700)

“CAROL” (2:21) [Arc BMI—C. Berry]
Chuck Berry, the rock ’n roller who owns one of the most excitine sounds in the business, gets a chance to display his talent once again via his new Chess outing. And the chanter never sounded better, vocallv or instrumentally, as he pounds out a hard-hitting, gal-titled rocker dubbed “Carol”. As soon as the kids get wind of this one they’ll be flocking to the stores.

“HEY PEDRO” (2:18) [Arc BMI—C. Berry]
The flipside, “Hey Pedro”, is an infectious, instrumental cha-cha with Chuck Interjecting a few Mexican-styled lines along the way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SPANIELS (Vee-Jay 290)

“STORMY WEATHER” (2:29) [Mills ASCAP—H. Arlen, T. Koehler]
The Spaniels, who have a number of r&b hits under their belt, come up with another sensational offering that looks like dual-mart paydirt. The boys hop on the ‘bring back the old-timer’s bandwagon’ as they tastefully revive one of the all-time greats, “Stormy Weather”. It’s a spirited, up tempo interpretation that should easily find its wav back into today’s market.

“HERE IS WHY I LOVE YOU” (2:29) [Conrad BMI—J Hudson, J. Cochran]
On the reverse slicing the crew smoothly carves out a very pretty, slow moving lover’s ballad dubbed “Here Is Whv I Love You”. Strong new tune tho overshadowed by the oldie.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOMMY RIDGELY (Herald 526)

B+ “MAIRZY BOATS AND DOZY DOATS” (2:10) [Miller ASCAP —Drake, Hoffman, Livingston]
A delightful, happy-go-lucky revival of the old novelty favorite is fiavorfully presented by Tommy Ridgely. The ork supplies a dandy, cha-cha-rock backdrop for Tommy’s coin-catching performance. Tune could be a smash all over again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3YX8kLA2vk

B ‘I’VE HEARD THAT STORY BEFORE” (2:38) [Angel BMI—T. Ridgely]
This end the warbler pipes with heartfelt sincerity on a potent romantic affair set to a fish beat ballad pace.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhMkoVhPwI8

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE HAVEN KNIGHTS (Atlas 1092)

B+ “WHY GO ON PRETENDING” (l:57) [Mac-Avery BMI — A. Oliva]
The Haven Knights could have a click on their hands with this expressive, fish beat romantic item that they put across with telling effect. Superb lead vocal dished up by L. Gomez. Keep close tabs on this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QN0OSJTZOY

B “JUST TO BE IN LOVE”[Mac-Avery BMI—Gomez]
The group, with Gomez in the lead spotlight, sends up another top notch reading on a pausing-sighing love affair. Good double-decker.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RICHARD BERRY & LOCKETTES (Flip 336)

B+ “THE MESS AROUND” (2:33) [Limax BMI—R. Ber-ry]
Add another new dance step to the teenster’s list. The inviting contribution is made by Richard Berry and the Lockettes. Enticing rock ’n roller that could be a big one at the record hops in the near future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35gp_MXaiuo

B+ “HEAVEN 0N WHEELS” 0+ (2:05) [Limax BMI—M. Johnson, C. Taylor]
On the bottom deck Berry and the group blast out another piece of wax dynamite. A fast moving side with a very strong commercial feeling. Don’t lose sight of this side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rl4Cl0gsOI

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE VELOURS (Cub 9014)

“CRAZY LOVE” (2:12) [Duo-Selma BMI—Brizant, Winston]
Look for the Velours to be jumpin’ into the charts, r&b and nonwise, in the weeks to come. And the disk destined to turn the trick for the group is a zany romantic novelty tagged “Crazy Love”. It’s a gimmicked-up, rock-a-cha-cha item, complete with laughs, that the boys work over in tantalizing fashion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxuMvPAxOrc

“I’LL NEVER SMILE AGAIN” (2:15) [Pickwick ASCAP—R. Lowe]
Flip is an r&b-modernized treatment of the old, tear-compelling favorite, “I’ll Never Smile Again”. Pretty coupler. Sammy Lowe ably handles the baton work on both halves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_F24prePxQ

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE GUYTONES (DeLuxe 6169)

B+ "YOUR HEART’S BIGGER THAN MINE” (2:39) [Jay &Cee BMI—Evans, Shubert] The Guytones, spotlighting a superb lead voice, convincingly render a potent piece of fish beat material that has the earmarks of a big seller. A heart-rending, romantic ballad handled in smooth and polished fashion by the group.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVrQLOABp_s

B+ “TELL ME (HOW WAS I TO KNOW)” (2:09) [Miller ASCAP—Evans, Gibson] Lower entry is a delectable jumper on which the artists bubble over with effervescence. A two-sided money-maker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsYwpMfzAZw

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE EXCELS

B+ “BABY DOLL” (2:32) [New- 0 ' kirk BMI—R. Diaz]
The Excels could do very well on their Central debut as they breeze thru a fast moving romantic pleaser in top flight, r&r style. Deck is alive, gets a sock vocal reading and a happy instrumental assist by A1 Browne’s ork.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9970KWiK3CQ

B “YOU’RE MINE FOREVER” (2:20) [Newkirk BMI—Drange, Browne]
Here the group, especially the lead voice, demonstrates its grade “A” ability with a ballad. It’s a lovely, slow paced piece that the songsters polish off with finesse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUA40gnqIHA

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEE ALLEN & BAND (Ember 1039)

“TIC TOC” (2:20) [Angel BMI—L. Allen]
Lee Allen, the man who authored the r&r click of a few months back, “Strollin’ With Mr. Lee”, comes up with two more self-penned instrumentals, either of which could capture a top chart position. Top end, tagged “Tic Toe”, features a catchy rockin’ novelty beat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTflCPuet5Q

“CHUGGIN”’ (2:30) [Angel BMI—L. Allen]
The under half, labeled “Chuggin’ ”, tastefully swings along at a quick shuffle tempo. Two solid money-makers with the ear-pleasing Allen sax front and center. Watch ’em both.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFhY5kQqnmQ

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE TOKENS (Gary 1006)

B+ “COME DANCE WITH ME” "T (2:10) [New Ventures—Wildon BMI—Honey, Hall, Denis, Olds, Spicer, Kane]
The Gary label could have its initial chart-rider in this quick stepping rocker tailor-made for teenage hoofers. Terrific all- around performance. Ops, dealers and deejays—take note!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bdXdsmXT3I

C+ “DOOM-LANG” (2:10) [New l/T Ventures—Wildon BMI—Honey, Hall, Olds, Spicer, Kane]
On the under slicing the artists brightly ride out a quick beat novelty item. Top deck has the big edge tho.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snrR_NB1kco

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WANDA JACKSON (Capitol 4026)

B+ “MEAN MEAN MAN” (2:10) IS ' [Central BMI — W. Jackson]
Wanda Jackson employs the femme rock-a-billy approach on this half of her newest Capitol pairing. It’s a torrid, all-market rock ’n roller that the thrush drives out in coin-catching fashion. Exciting musical support.
