Jill and Dave, it's a year round problem here. We just aren't a good
growing area for them.

That's a damned shame. We can now get asparagus almost all year round
and the imported stuff is infinitely better than it used to be. However,
even the best imported does not match the fresh, local products. He have
nice, rich, sandy soil here that is great for asparagus. It even grows
wild along the road in some places. When the fresh local stuff arrives
there is very little that breaks off when you snap it so there is little
waste. Fresh local asparagus should be available any day now.

Sounds lovely! Here, it's all thick grey clay. That's probably the
problem. You are lucky here to be able to use the top 1/3rd. I just
get jarred or frozen. It's too much waste to me for an expensive
3.99lb item for me.
