Today's poem on Penny's Poetry Blog:
To My Sister, by William Wordsworth

It is the first mild day of March:
Each minute sweeter than before,
The red-breast sings from the tall larch
That stands beside our door.

Thanks. It is a simple poem expressing a simple thought -- it's the
first good day, let's go for a walk -- and can be read and appreciated
on those terms.

There's more to the poem than that, as I learned when I was reading
about it before blogging. For one thing, it reflects the ongoing
"nature" vs "civilization" debate that was jumpstarted by the Romantic
movement. This poem was published in Lyrical Ballads, the first
important Romantic collection in the UK; and its second part has lines
that sound like a manifesto for those beliefs, such as:

One moment now may give us more
Than fifty years of reason

So it's more important than it looks. Even so, all that should not get
in the way of appreciating the poem on its own terms.
