For me the greatest version of Brahms' violin cocerto...And probably
one of the most extraordinary concerts recorded...
Monteux recorded it 5 times (Milstein x2, Szering, Stern and
Kogan)...All superb...But Kogan is simply UNFORGETTABLE...

heard the 1st movt ( enuf for me)! Yes, very intense playing, when appropriate, is very impressive. and even exciting However, in the more lyrical passages the playing is too 'hyper' and in general there is a lack of beauty and elegance. Quite a few inaccuracies.. for example, in the cadenza, which seems to be a mixture of Joachim and perhaps Kogan, he misses a high note, and very cleverly covers it up by changing a few following notes!
A better mixture of intensity and at even at times elegance either of the Heifetz studio recordings are a more enjoyable choice.
BTW- FWIW, my friend, a Russian in the 1st violin section of the NY PHIL knew both Oistrakh and Kogan, said O. was a very nice person Kogan, 'a nasty man'!!
