On thinking it over, the word that comes to me is "declamatory". Haydn is played as if he were making Big Statements. That strikes me as perverse. Just as I wouldn't want Beethoven to be played as if he were Haydn, I wouldn't want it the other way around either. Haydn (to me) often chose deliberately modest themes, the more to demonstrate the powers of his imagination in where he took them. To hear these themes declaimed is almost comical.
