Apart from Kuchar on Naxos, I've not been wildly impressed by any of the sets to be honest. In dribs and drabs you can find single CDs of particular symphonies, here and there, Malko 7th, Previn 5th, Tennstedt 5th, etc. Haven't heard the Karajan 5th (is it too plushy?). Weller and Jarvi are ok in their cycles, but nothing that stands out as really superlative, but for a major 20th century composer, Prokofiev hasn't been recorded anywhere near as much or as well as Shostakovich. Then there is Gergiev/LSO with his toothpick? Who knows?

Leinsdorf seemed to me to be a good Prokofiev conductor, and his piano concerto cycle with Browning was pretty good as I recall.

I know that Muti has recorded some Prokofiev symphonies and it is about time they were tarted up and distributed. Muti seems to me to be the ideal conductor for this composer.

Given that there might be another 3 dozen LvB sets in the offing, you would think someone would muster up some effort for a couple of new Prok cycles.

Clearly what's lacking is a Ninth.
You want a symphony cycle, you need a Ninth.
Prokofiev is not really a composer in need of an audience.
The violin concertos belong to the standard repertoire, as do one or two of his piano concertos.
R&J is always getting danced somewhere and there are a million recordings of the suites.
Cinderella is danced often too, either in Ashton's perfect choreography, or in more recent versions.
Symphonies nrs 5 and 1 get played and recorded often.
And yes, it's hard to find a consistent 1 - 7 cycle, but that's partly because the works aren't consistent.

Prokofiev himself wanted to “reconstruct” it, like he did with his Fourth
Symphony, even he assigned a new Opus Number to the new version of it. But
he died before he could do it. And I agree with him.

It's one of Karajan's very best recordings. Not plushy at all.
