I Seamonkey and Thunderbird. You right-click the server for subscribe
option. A box pops up and you enter 'drwho' it will find groups
containing that.
Then it will say 'download 500 headers' or something like that.

I can't help with SeaMonkey but I did walk a GG poster through
setting up XanaNews on rec.sports.soccer recently, it was hard work
but we got there in the end and he's now posting to Usenet with his
newsreader... so have patience, it might take a bit of time but
you'll get there.

And if you don't, well... we should have been having this discussion
a few weeks ago!!!

Additionally, in SeaMonkey, you have to authenticate to the server each
time you connect to the UseNet Server. Go to 'Edit' -> 'Mail &
Newsgroups Account Settings', select 'Server Settings' for the
appropriate 'Server Account' and tick 'Always request authentication
when connecting to this server' then 'OK' your way out.

I would expect Thunderbird to require something similar.
