Thank you. There is plenty to choose from. I will start with Sibelius.

I thought his Beethoven 9 quite good for his age, though I didn't care much for some of the soloists. His Shosty 7 sports a remarkably nauseating first-movement march (I mean it). I think he's got more life to him in the Bruckner 9 than Haitink's first one, for instance, but I wished he pushed the first movement finale a bit more. I haven't listened to the whole thing. The Paris orchestra acquits themselves well- at least better than I expected.

Seeing Mäkelä videos reminds me of the first vids I saw of Nelsons. I thought there really was something special to N's gleeful, manic focus, and this was affirmed by some of the recordings, especially the Strauss CBSO ones. But his Bruckner, Brahms and Beethoven are unremarkable, and the good Shosty recordings aren't enough for me to think he's fulfilling what looked to be great potential. It is therefore refreshing to see Mäkelä doing nothing but getting results- to my eye, he's not distracted by himself. And I tend to like what I hear. So, yes, real potential.

It is also remarkable to see him conducting everywhere so soon. The COncertgebouw? Wow. Chicago will have him in town in the spring to conduct the Firebird as well as Prokofiev's second violin concerto (pardon me if I forget the soloist- not a name that means a lot to me). With Zweden in town to do Mahler 6 the following week, it is is a good time to plan a visit (or just be a resident).

He and the LPO are scheduled to do the 2nd Prokofiev Violin Concerto (with Lozakovich) in London on 2/26/22 c/w Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony.

Zweden presses no buttons for me .... and I just can't work out why.

I think he's got more life to him in the Bruckner 9 than Haitink's first one, for instance, but I wished he pushed the first movement finale a bit more. I haven't listened to the whole thing. The Paris orchestra acquits themselves well- at least better than I expected..

I'm sure Lozakovich is the soloist here, too.

He reminds me of Solti. Despite his background, he doesn't seem to be a "phrasing" guy, but someone who keeps everything tight and together (and I don't necessarily mean that as a compliment, but it can work in certain music).. I have a broadcast recording of him doing Shosty 8 with the CSO, and everything is tight and together- no transmission slips or gaps between ensemble parts as the orchestra coordinates. Nothing extreme like Mravinsky, but the spirt of relentless concentration, nonetheless. Again, that's not saying a whole lot- I saw Welser-Most do a great 8 with Cleveland, and I'm not a fan at all- at least in other music. Neither seem like leaders with real imagination, just COOs. Sometimes, that is just fine. And I don't think Mahler 6 needs a lot from a conductor to be an enjoyable experience. Keep everyone together, let the orchestra do their thing. Would I rather hear Honeck do it? Of course. But Zweden will do.

This leads me to wonder what Zweden's departure from the NYPhil really amounts to. I can't believe he'd slam that door shut without there being another waiting for him. Zweden was well-liked here when he was a regular with the CSO, and Muti won't be here forever. And the local powers will want a star.
