I'm diverting this for the moment to discuss R Strauss's harmonisations. Fruhling is undeniably interesting harmonically and I've been looking at the score and how Strauss moves his harmonies. He uses a lot of semitone shifts, for instance, apart from other techniques. Fruhling seems nominally to be in Eb and starts on Cm. It then goes down to Ab minor and progressively descends lower in fairly rapid shifts before coming back to Eb.

I find these shifts fascinating. Do I like them? I don't know. In this case yes, though in other cases like Ruhe meine Seele I'm not quite so sure. It's characteristic of German music around this period, and you find these harmonic shifts in Berg's 7 Early Songs for instance. It's certainly interesting hearing harmonies shift unexpectedly though if you listen to the generic "how to write a song" videos they assume that the listener is wanting to hear suspensions resolve more conventionally.
