This is one of the main features of the Sennheiser 800 (and 800S)
headphones:

But this sensation of tridimenional space, we can obtain it with any
headphone!...
It is enough to listen _at the same time_ on headphones AND on speakers
(while being obviously in front of these last ones), and to finely
proportion the balance between the two listening systems...
Guaranteed effect!...

One can hear many more dimensions
by adding absinthe to the mix. No need
for additional speakers -- or ears.

If you listen to music on one of Apple's newer MacBook Pros, you'll find
that the sound is actually placed in space as you're listening. It's
pretty amazing to hear it done on a laptop with micro size speakers.
The bass is, of course, without much heft, but it's a different and
enjoyable listening experience, if you have to listen to music on your
laptop without headphones.
