The Banana Boat Song - Tarriers

Alan Arkin should have won at least one Academy Award between 1966 and 1972, baby!!

"Pass the juice to me Bruce"

Banned outriight by the BBC (on the grounds of "gruesome subject
matter") Decca here decided not to release it at all. Radio Luxembourg
had also decided not to play it should it see UK release. So that only
left AFN in Germany who played it regularly (tho the signal was real
bad in London). So I never actually heard the record until well into
the 60's and then wondered what all the fuss was about (we did however
get his "Ape Call")

>Slow Down Brother - Ferlin Huskey
>Bob Cat Bop - Simon Crum

I can't claim to be much of a fan of Mr Husky aka Simon Crum and ak
earlier still as Terry Preston. But these are two of his better
offerings (incidentally note the extra "e" in his last name here which
was that way on the earlier Huskey records).

His biggest ever hit was a year later in 1957 when he took the Smokey
Rogers song "Gone" (that he'd originally released back in 1952 as
"Terry Preston") high in the US charts

The original 1952 Smokey Rogers version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIeHWrB8XbM

The 1952 Terry Preston version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hQCXAhASo8

As for "Simon Crum" (the alter ego Husky usually used for his humorous
stuff) "Bop Cat Bop" was always a well sought after item in rockabilly

circles so much so that it was booted in the mid-70's and shortly
afterwards made it on to the "Capitol Rockabillies" album

Crum's biggest seller here in UK came in 1961 with the Johnny
Tillotson comedy takeoff "Enormity In Motion" .And at Moondog's we
were often asked for his real hard to find Elvis novelty "Don't Be
Mad" from 1963

>Stranded In The Jungle - Jayhawks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmwxbHLrvBc

The original version----it's good but The Cadets cover is GREAT and
easily the #1 version in my book. Incidentally the Jayhawks version is
the flipside of the record---"My Only Darling" was the "A" side.

By the dates they appear in Billboard the really dire Gadabouts
version on Mercury seems to predate the Cadets by a week or so. This
is truly a dreadful version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEH-rPvf8Bw

Fourth version of the song to appear in October 1956 comes from this
side of the puddle---the Johnston Brothers of Great Britain on Decca
with another godawful version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hrv23a9M3jA

Incidentally knowing how much he likes the song I know Bruce will be
pleased at my reminding him that the "A" side of the above Johnston
Brothers atrocity was their version of the much recorded "In The
Middle Of The House" novelty

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyXmivnT1Iw

>The Banana Boat Song - Tarriers

I never warmed to this "hill and gully rider" version and for me the
only "banana" song that counted that year was the Belafonte hit

>Gonna Get Along Without You Now - Patience & Prudence

Reminded me that I watched the Freed bio-pic again recently (with the
bit where the "Patience & Prudence" depicted in the movie burst into
tears in Freed's office).

First made famous by Teresa Brewer back in 1952 the song was
originally titled "I'm Gonna Get Along Without You" with the original
version coming from Roy Hogsed in 1951

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O87_zZN7Y5E

>Pretty Bad Blues - Ronnie Self

IIRC the very first white winner of one of Bruce's Obscurities
tournaments back in Apriil 2020 (thanks to Steve).

And a terrific rockabilly record to boot! (which it was of course :)

>You'll Never Never Know - Platters

One of the highspots of "The Girl Can't Help It"movie was The
Platters performing this song which sits for me close behind "My
Prayer" as their best of 1956

Regarding that Gadabouts version...

I stand by my over 20 year old post.

From Roger ->   > Definitely the worst R&B cover ever by a white group!!

Not sure if I'll have time to do a thorough vote, but just in case, I
couldn't let this one slip by. Roger is being way too kind.
I might even snip it as such: > Definitely the worst <snip> ever <snip>
I'll even stand by my original following comments:
--
This version is so bad, the mental picture I have is 4 or 5 too white guys
without an ounce of rhythm between them. And then, Pat Boone trying, but
failing miserably, to get them to sing with even a tenth of the soul and
emotion he displayed on his Little Richard songs.
