Lennon had some sort of falling out with Dylan at some point; maybe it was Dylan's attempt to warn Lennon that Yoko had "bad vibes."

Fred Seaman has an interesting anecdote about Lennon's reaction to Dylan's song "You Gotta Serve Somebody." IIRC, Seaman said that Lennon sneered at the notion and asked: "What is Dylan now -- a waiter?" And of course Lennon penned "Serve Yerself."

What was Dylan doing at Yoko's party? I suspect it's the Mintz connection that resulted in his being there. Both Ono and Dylan had Elliot Mintz as a spokesman.

I did not know that there was a Dylan connection to Yoko with Elliot Mintz.
I think Lennon and Dylan kind of went to war over Gotta Serve Somebody. Lennon probably realized that Dylan could be playing everyone and was, as Keith Richards called him, a 'prophet of profit'. However, I think that tiff, if there was one, was just the tip of the iceberg. I think Dylan intended to insinuate himself as much as possible into the lives of the Beatles...especially John. I think Dylan was an invisible man in their breakup. And I think Dylan would have encouraged John in regards to Yoko...

My sense is that Dylan's Christian phase was sincere but delusional. It persisted through several years and at least three albums. I remember hearing about Dylan preaching to his audiences and asking them how many of them had been born again -- and cringing.

Was there a specific event that led to Lennon's turning against Dylan? He sung, "I don't believe in Zimmerman" in the song "God." Goldman suggests that it was Lennon's associates' attitudes towards Dylan that changed his mind. He had been hanging out with AJ Weberman and David Peel at that time. Both of these characters had grown hostile to Dylan.

DA Pennebaker created a short movie of Lennon & Dylan being driven around in a Taxi; it's on Youtube as "Dylan and Lennon Share a Taxi Ride" or somesuch. If Pennebaker had hoped to capture a great meeting of the minds, he must have been disappointed. Lennon looks unhappy, and Dylan babbles away incoherently in a stoner's drawl. At one point Dylan pitches forward as if to vomit. Later, he talks about how he might throw up on the camera; he might have been serious.

If I were Lennon, I'd have told the cab driver to pull over & escaped.
