Unfortunately it ended in 1908 with his Polonia Symphony, Op. 24. He
then became a politician and continued his performance career The
symphony is a lush composition, magnificently scored for a huge
orchestra and I think it compares favorably with Gliere's Ilya
Muromets. The recording I have is by the BBC Scottish Symphony under
Maksymiuk.

The other outstanding Paderewski work (I don't care for his piano
concerto or Polish fantasy) is his opera Manru which premiered in 1901
in German. It was later translated into English and Polish and the
English version is the only opera by a Polish composer ever performed
by the Metropolitan Opera. They never have done King Roger or
Moniuzko's operas. I've enjoyed listening to a CD set in Polish by
Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz.

Just recently I got the first DVD version (PAL) of Manru in a set of 3
Polish operas from the Chopin Institute. It has English subtitles so
I finally found out what it is all about. It deals with the racial
prejudices that arise when a Gypsy marries a Polish girl. There is
plenty of both Gypsy and Polish folk music influence in the score
including a Gypsy violinist onstage. I would have much preferred a
traditional costumed setting but this was updated to the present. The
Gypsies were presented as a big motorcycle gang. Still I found it a
worthwhile break from traditional fare.

The recording I have, and I am not making this up, is with Pomeranian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bydgoszcz Wodiczko from 1973 on Olympia. I have no recollection of when or why I acquired it or if I ever listened to it. I have not added any additional consonants to the conductor's name.

Coincidentally, CRQ Editions have just released a 'live' Carnegie Hall performance of the Paderewski Piano Concerto from 1970, in which Earl Wild and Leopold Stokowski make the sparks fly as only two such maverick musicians could do ...
