Beethoven's Elegischer Gesang Op. 118 was originally written for soprano,
alto, tenor, and bass singers and string quartet. However, it is usually
performed and recorded with a mixed choir and large string ensemble or
orchestra.
Can anyone recommend a CD recording of this work with SATB and string
quartet? If such a recording exists, for I haven't found one.

You could try the recording by the Berliner Doppelquartett and
the Hantzschk-Quartett (Hans-Joachim Hantzschk/Horst Pietsch/
Peter Seydel/Hartmut Friedrich), conducted by Dietrich Knothe
on Eterna 8 26 258 (LP, stereo).
