A friend obtained a sealed CD of Mahler 5 with the Royal Philharmonic, Previn conducting, on the RPO's own label. I have never heard of it and I'm not finding anything on it from the usual sources - although Discogs does have a listing. No reviews, no on-line references. Anyone heard of this thing?

Never heard of it either. This discography:
https://mahlerfoundation.org/mahler/discography/symphony-no-5/
suggests it might be the 1990 Inoue recording mistakenly labelled. The Inoue was also issued on the RPO label with a total timing 75'23.

The individual movement times are pretty much a match. And a great performance by any name.

Check this Royal Philharmonic Mahler 5 on YouTube ... It illustrates the cover and shows that it was Inoue conducting the RPO 'live' at the Royal Festival Hall in 1990. I doubt that the work was ever in Previn's repertoire ....

If you scroll down and also check "Music in this Video" there is a bunch of claims from various sources that state the conductor to be James Levine, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Gabriel Feltz, Harold Farberman, Michael Gielen or Daniele Gatti. This is typical of YouTube's automated "Content ID" System which cannot tell the difference between one recording of a classical piece of music with another. Anyway, the illustrated cover is undoubtedly correct!

I did see him conduct quite a good Mahler 9 with the NHK Symphony maybe about 10 years ago.

There was a discussion about this on-line in the past. It is the Inoue recording, misattributed to Previn who never recorded the work. I think it was confirmed by the RPO.
