Miss Giuffre, if that famous photo is any indication, appears to have been having a very good time, and if I remember rightly, she would have been considered as past the age of consent in most jurisdictions in the world. And now she has got herself a whole load of publicity and a great deal of money as well. She appears to be, in short, a gold-digger. Prince Andrew is, of course, a fool.

As for the money, it will no doubt come from the Crown Estates, probably the Duchy of Cornwall. I doubt that the British taxpayer will be troubled financially to any great extent.

who earn more than that (and even much more)
from the FAANG (er, MAANG) companies. His
Royal Highness would be well advised to take

I'm sure that this comes as a surprise to Princess Anne, noted for her horse-riding abilities and devotion to worthy causes. Meanwhile the transpacific/transatlantic bean-counters among us may be delighted to hear that the income from the Royal Estates probably covers their current expenses, and that the next sovereign has already made known his intention to cut back the number of 'family' on the royal payroll.

The UK is not a happy place these days, what with rising cost of living due to the Ukraine crisis, rising crime and unemployment, etc. But the enthusiastic crowds outside Buckingham Palace have demonstrated just how well and how much Queen Elizabeth is regarded by old and young alike, which is more than can be said for the increasingly out of touch Prime Minister.

I'm afraid more Americans are likely to go to London to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge than are likely to go to Washington to see Hunter Biden's home movies, although I realise that some of the latter may have considerable appeal in certain quarters. Still, they don't seem to have arrived on You Tube yet.

From an Australian perspective, spending billions of dollars every four years to elect either a billionnaire or someone in a millionaire's pocket looks irrational. If and when Australia becomes a republic we will assuredly *not* have an executive president, and we will not have the whole razzamatazz of state caucuses and conventions either, although as we only have six states and two territories it would be considerably cheaper than the circus you have to put up with.

The contemporary world has some very pleasant monarchies and some very terrible republics.

It is. It would actually be much simpler and far cheaper to auction the
job to the highest bidder! ;-)

Democracy (however defined) is not about efficiency. It is about keeping
everyone happy -- or at least not too unhappy.

1. Being a republic and being a one-party state are not mutually exclusive. Many of the world's republics are authoritarian or in Africa, miltary dictatorships. All the European monarchies are parliamentary democracies.
