Well, the original and Sarah McLachlan are good. Herbie Hancock is completely out of step with the lyrics - just another job. At least he stuck with the original bar structure and didn't turn it all into 4/4.

A casual listener hears this song as something a bit unusual and unique but probably hasn't counted the beats, which contain 7/4 and 6/4 bars. They sound quite natural, like the old blues singers in the deep South who used irregular bars as they felt them. It's very much in that tradition, and I'm sure Paul wrote this "as he felt it" with his guitar. One reason why it sounds so wrong on jazz piano - that's completely outside the old guitar tradition which may have been somewhere in Paul's mind.

Irregular bars in popular songs make for some intriguing results, sometimes a real gem. Here's another, with bars of 7/4 and 5/4. One of the nicest things Andre Previn gave to music.

Thx Andy, very informative. And yes, the Previn song is a haunting beauty.
