Concerning Stokowski's 1940's broadcast:

- Neptune is a mysterious as a Twilight Zone episode, but also a sensuous, downright erotic world. This sense is not as present in the EMI CD. After a lot of listening (I also pulled out Boult's and Andrew Davis' recordings) I have come to the conclusion that this is one of the finest performances I have heard.

Apropos Stokowski's timings for his two extant "Neptunes," they must be among the slowest and fastest on records. Here first is the 1943 NBC Symphony broadcast at 9:30 ...

And here is his 'Capitol' Los Angeles recording from 1956 at 6:39 ... Quite a difference! ...

Concerning the Capitol lp, Neptune was the last track on side 2. I have wondered if side 2 was running out of space causing him to try to 'fit' it in by speeding up the tempo.
