(q)Ukrainian composers have composed some of the most popular classical
music ever! However, audiences at classical music concerts often don’t
realize that when they listen to this classical music, they are listening
to music written by a composer with Ukrainian roots or influenced by the
Ukrainian music tradition.
And so, classical composers such Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky
are labeled as representatives of Russian classical music. Instead, these
classical music composers could just as easily be labeled as music
composers of Ukraine.(/q)

I agree, let's take away as much as possible from bully Putin and his
thugs.
Also, the Austrians don't need this Mozart:

I understand that this is well-intentioned, but however one may feel about modern Russia and its government, referring to these composers as "Ukrainian" is anachronistic at best. I could be wrong, but there are no personal documents or even second-hand testimonials that demonstrate that any of these composers ever personally identified with Ukraine or its culture. In fact, all three (especially Stravinsky) often spoke about being Russian, identifying as such, the influence of Russian vernacular art upon their own, their love of Russia, etc. Their being from a minority ethnicity within Russia or a multiethnic Russian (although none of the aforementioned composers identified as such, at least to my knowledge) makes them no less "Russian" (just like being multiethnic, etc. makes one no less American).

Ukraine can (have they?) reclaimed Nikolai Gogol, who despite his popularity and overwhelming influence in Russian art often wrote about feeling like an outsider in St. Petersburg, and felt an intense longing for the place of his birth.

Otherwise, why not let Poland "reclaim" Shostakovich, Ukraine "reclaim" Bernard Herrmann, or even Russia "reclaim" Immanuel Kant?

It should indeed! No one has combined
as perversely as Kant the idiosyncrasies
of both cultures! ;-)

I vote to have Kant reclassified as a
Germano-Russian philosopher! I do
not doubt for a moment Putin would
approve! ;-)
