I think the 'ceol mor' Scottish bagpipe repertoire, historically associated with aristocratic households, deserves attention as both a serious 'classical' tradition and as a serious drone music a la South Asian traditions. The music is mostly kept alive today as part of a competition circuit, though, and has had the vitality drained out of its rhythmic/ornamental nuance as a result. Barrie Orme, linked above, claims to have learned the 'old'/'celtic' way of playing from a family of pipers who moved to Australia in the mid 19th century. Has anyone heard this stuff? Other pibroch/ceol mor recs?
