Next Tuesday, the Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans, who's already made a
'regular' recording of the Winterreise (in the sense that he's
accompanied by a pianist) will perform the work solo in Amsterdam, i.e.
accompanying himself on the piano. 'The way Schubert did when it was
first played' is the rationale behind this.

So anyone interested will be able to have look & listen (on YouTube,
presumably). I'm curious how it will be different.

I can't be at the concert, but they'll be streaming the performance two
days later, on Thursday. Not free, you have to buy a ticket, I see:
https://www.concertgebouw.nl/concerten/1385748-online-concert-thomas-oliemans-speelt-%C3%A9n-zingt-schuberts-winterreise
(8.15 pm Amsterdam time, in case anyone in other time zones is interested.)

Anyone ever hear a solo performance like that, of the Winterreise or
other Schubert cycles, in a professional setting? Are there any
recordings of it, that you know?

Thanks for the pointers.

Most likely we are going
to find he sings better
than he plays the piano.

Nice new Winterreise recording, by the way: Benjamin Apple and James
Baillieu.
I only heard a few songs, but if I had to categorise it I'd rank it in
the Florian Boesch school of Lieder singers doing a little more 'acting'
rather than merely stressing the melodic line (not that they neglect this).
How convincing this is, will of course partly depend on the listener.
But I've quite enjoyed what I heard so far.

Update. Silly me, I have little experience with these online recitals:
the livestream is not quasi-live for just two hours. If you buy a ticket
it's available for a month from tonight.
