I just heard them on the BBC in the UK (Building a Library) in Schubert's C major quintet - very good. The recording quality in the Brahms seems to be a bit more edgy on my system.

Archibudelli's Schubert quintet is better known to me because I got their disc with Brahms sextets only a week ago or so, but I think they are both worthy alternatives although to me the Brahms also seems more edgy, not sure whether in sound or playing. It's further away from more mellow recordings, such as the (excellent) Raphael/hyperion than their Schubert.

Was Brahms sexting?

Sextets are inefficient.
One can have two trios
instead with the same
resources.

Indeed - the players would use less fuel getting to gigs so an environmentally sound policy.

Sextets are better than chamber orchestras in these Brahms works - much better. I tried a couple of chamber versions but really disliked the extra strings.

Not so clear. Six people in one van going to the same place may be more fuel-efficient than 3 people in each of to cars going to different places. I realize we are kidding around, but there is a serious omission in this kind of "analysis" (which extremists especially do all the time). It totally ignores the preferences of people who actually want to hear sextets.

Not for me. I like the string orchestra recordings of Souvenir de

Do you have a link? I didn't find anything with a (perhaps cursory)
web search.

In response to other comments: I agree the Tchaikovsky works better in
larger ensembles than do the Brahms and Schoenberg, but I still prefer
