Google does not seem to be able to help me here:
I'm curious to find performance listings for concerts where Antonio Pappano, Vilde Frang, and Bruno Walter appeared. Together, of course. No, obviosly, these would all be different concerts. And only two of them were ones I attended, though I was just talking with a gentleman who did see Walter conduct the CSO, so I'm curious to see when that might have been.

Obviously, the more recent concerts are a more likely to show up in a search, but I can't find a review of a Frang concert, and the one I found of a Pappano one just didn't jog my memory. I know Pappano did the Tallis Fantasia, and recall Frang performing the Mendelssohn violin concerto. Whether this was the same concert or two concerts I don't recall. I did find a review of Pappano where he did Tallis and a Sibelius 2, and I know I never heard that. Any suggestions?

First, am I correct in assuming "CSO" means Chicago Symphony Orch. If so, a little data might be helpful:

Bruno Walter was a regular guest conductor with the CSO virtually every season from 1946-1958, except the 47-48 season. Programs were numerous and varied but, unfortunately, many were in an era where either the CSO was not broadcasting or where the home recording technology was such that few acetates and wires have survived. Walter did not record commercially with the CSO, but his 1958 performance with the orch of Mozart K626 from WBAI broadcast has been issued on CD.

Pappano has been an occasional but not frequent conductor of the orch. Without doing a research deep-dive at this point, I'm aware of the following:
Mid-Nov, 1994--Britten Grimes Interludes/Chausson Poeme de l'amour w Quivar/Copland 3
Early April, 2001--Honegger 3/Britten Les Illuminations w/Upshaw/Beethoven Symphony #5
Jan, 2002--Haydn 22/Primrosch-From "A book of Hours" w/Saffer/Shostakovich 10
Jan, 2003--VW-Thomas Tallis/Prok V Concerto #1 w/Shaham/Sibelius 2
Jan, 2008--Liadov-Enchanted Lake/Shos Cello Con 2 w/Chang/ Rach Sym 2
Nov, 2010-Mozart 23/Beethoven PC2 w/Biss/ Mendelssohn 4
About two-thirds of the Pappano programs above were broadcast; the 2002 and 2003 performances were not, however, for the CSO was off-the-air from Fall, 2001 until 2007 though they did begin to record concerts in 2004 for eventual broadcast when the series resumed.

Hope that helps a bit.

That it does. What is your reference? Any way to check Frang?

It is strange I remember seeing Salonen do a Sibelius 2 with the orchestra (sitting in the rear near Jay Friedman and the timps, a heckuva show) but really don't believe I ever heard the piece with any other conductor, let alone Pappano- and I was in the rear for that, too. But I do recall the Tallis Fantasia with him, sucking through his teeth as he conducted. I wonder if there was a substitution the night I was there.

If it helps at all, the Salonen concert also had Insomnia. That was a rocking concert, start to finish.

Salonen did do the Sibelius 2 with the orch...in Feb, 2011. Rounding out that program was his own V Concerto w Josefowicz and Debussy Faun.

The Sibelius 2 shows up with some regularity these decades--Eri Klas 3/95; Wigglesworth 5/98; Maazel 12/00; Robertson 2/06; Salonen 2/11 (as above); and MTT 3/16.

PS--to your source question...I'm a longtime (since 1970's) subscriber and collector who had some involvement in the CSO Archive when HF set it up in 1990ish. I've kept my own databases on perfs, broadcasts, etc I will have to do a bit more research on Frang. I know her site indicates she played with the CSO but I'm not immediately finding her, unless in the last year or two where I missed a few downtown concerts or Ravinia where I've skipped the last few seasons. Unfortunately, while Theodore has some holes in it, to my knowledge Ravinia effectively doesn't keep an ongoing archive. However, I save season/rep schedules; will advise if/what I find.

PPS---I'm rapidly coming to conclusion Frang might not have yet played with CSO. In multiple press I see reference to her expected debut with CSO in the 2020-21 season. We all know what happened to the music world in that season and Chicago was no exception. Programs were cancelled for all but the last 3 weeks (late May/early June) of the season and she did not appear in any of those 3. Also checked the Ravinia 21 schedule (2020 season was cancelled) and she did not appear on that listing either.

I recall seeing Frang for a few reasons. First, I didn't seek her out- the concert must have been part of a subscription. Similarly, I was lukewarm on the content: Mendelssoh, most likely, the kind of thing I might eagerly listen to at home but which is more likely to put me to sleep in a concert (though I don't recall the monster of sleep crawling up my back on that occasion). Finally, I'm certain I was behind the orchestra. I've only seen a few other orchestras on tour in Chicago- Cleveland, St. Petersburg and the LSO.. I remember those programs quite well.

So I'm sticking with my assertion that Frang performed with the CSO in a subscription concert somewhere around 2013. I think you for your help- I hope you find the research enjoyable.

And Pappano, by your reporting. But I still don't believe I saw Pappano perform the 2nd, even though I know I saw him conduct the Tallis Fantasia. Brain worms...

I can probably find the program page around as I also attended the (Thurs) concert. I also have the WFMT broadcast which was aired a few months later..

As for Frang, you've raised the possibility she could have played downtown with another (visiting) orchestra, which could surely be the case. One other possilbility....Ravinia. I reduced my attendance there in the 2010's so am a bit less certain on that venue. (I did find the rehearsal and concert scheds for the orch for 2013 and 2014 Ravinia seasons, though, and she was not listed at least in those summers.) Unfortunately, unless things have changed markedly in the last couple years, Ravinia doesn't have an "archive" per se to turn to.

Eureka (I think.) I believe I solved the mystery vis Frang.
She did appear in Orch Hall on 2/23/14 (Sun 3PM) but with a visiting orchestra, the St. Petersburg Phil, with Temirkanov conducting. Program was indicated as Prok VC2 and the Rach Symphony #2. Does that fit with your recollection?

A brilliant bit of sleuthing- I would never have put her together with Temirkanov, but, yes, that's the concert, and I was there. I guess I should keep my program books! But in all seriousness, you remember the performances that matter, and some concerts remain wholly vivid to me while others not. (Wholly vivid: Gielen conducting Poulenc double concerto and a Dutilleux Symphony 2 along with Valses nobles et sentimentales and La Valse- what a show!).

Thank you again!

One other request, but only if you feel like it- when did Salonen conduct "Insomnia" and what was it coupled with?

So, Ron, who would you like to be MD after Muti?

I guess I'd be a better archivist than MD. I wouldn't mind seeing Van Zweden in the job when it's time.

As to your Salonen Insomnia question...first week of April, 2003 (4/3 et seq); rest of the program was Sibelius V Con w Midori and Strav Firebird (complete). No broadcast of this one about; this program was in the interim years before they started recording again in 2004 for future broadcasts (which eventually resumed a few years later.)

Thanks very much. It's incredible- I recall Insomnia quite well. I don't recall the rest of the concert at all.

Interesting your Zweden preference. I'd love to know what is up with his New York breakup- he must have his eyes on something else, or perhaps it is 100% personal. No idea. His profile here has often seemed to me a bit Solti II both in terms of repertoire and conducting style. I'm sure he seems even more of a catch now- we love stealing from New York.

I don’t mean this in a sarcastic way, but am I missing something....Did
Muti announce that he was retiring from the CSO? I used to be a subscriber
and I still attend individual concerts, but I have heard nothing of that.
