Every time I listen to a MERCURY recording (which I have been doing for
more than 60 years!), I am amazed and dazzled by the quality of the
sound recording...
How can it be that one has NEVER done better for 50 or 70 years?!...I
ask the question...What Fine and Cozart have succeeded with 1 or 3
microphones and two tape recorders is quite simply incredible, unheard
of...

Part of the mystery can be solved if you listen very carefully. Spot
microphones were often added to the "famous" 3 mic, stereo Merc setup.

It sounds that way to me, even with only casual listening, but that makes a lie out of their information that only 2 or 3 microphones were used.

In my youth I hated the sound of Mercury recordings. Bright, harsh, dry. Now I require hearing aids to hear a full frequency range and Mercurys sound quite good on EQ'd headphones with a mild treble boost. I'd say RCA did it better, but I'm still looking forward to a Paray mono box.

Weren't Paray's stereo recordings made during the early stereo period when stereo recordings couldn't hold as much music as mono recordings?

Are the timings of the earlier mono recordings for those pieces that he later recorded in stereo longer than in the later stereo remakes? Therefore, were the tempos of the later stereo recordings faster than those early stereo recordings because they couldn't hold as much music as the earlier mono recordings?
