I recall hearing an unusual recording,
a child introduces the orchestral instruments,
one by one. Probably intended as educational,
but entertaining and charming.

Can anyone name this?

There is a recording of Britten's "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" by the NY Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein, in which the narration is by a young boy. Very enjoyable for young listeners.

I rented a CD from a library, containing that piece. But no narration.
The music itself isn't too scintillating.

So you say the narration was invented by Bernstein, in one particular
performance, but not the original, by Britten?

The narration is indeed by Britten, but the piece is played both with and without it. You almost certainly heard the Bernstein version. And, by the way, it's a terrific piece of music.
