I grew up listening to classical music on the BBC World Service shortwave radio...stuff like The Greenfield Collection...whatever I listened to was a mixed bag and I didn't have much choice in the matter ...only in the last 20 years was I acquainted with the idea of complete works of a composer by an artist, but I'm not hung up about them.

I do appreciate Arrau in his earlier recordings, especially the live ones....(I know you hate the guy but what do you think of his recording of one Book of Iberia?) And I like Pollini's Chopin , particularly the etudes..Hamelin's Medtner...A lot of Richter, Gilels, Sofro, Katchen, Wild, Horowitz, Van Cliburn, Schnabel, Rachmaninoff (as a pianist), Ogdon, Solomon , some Pires and Hamelin, Lipatti, Alicia de la Rocha, Bolet., Berman...

I find Ashkenazy , Perahia and Barenboim a bit bland...but I probably haven't listened to enough of their output. Brendel I gave up on because his sound was so thin and tinny ...but I'm sure I'm not qualified to pass judgement on him as a pianist.

I take your point about YT , but I find that I enjoy music better when I hear it...call me crazy but all the mannerisms and tics and facial expressions of the performers detract from my enjoyment.
