He was born 18 April 1882 and died aged 95 on 13 September 1977.

A recent upload on YouTube of a TV broadcast in 1969 featured him conducting the London Philharmonic in the Beethoven 5th and Schubert 8th. This was in preparation for a 'Phase 4 Stereo ' LP coupling of the two works that was made the following day. At the end of the Beethoven 5th, the TV announcer described Stokowski's performance as "stunning" but I wonder what he'd say today, in the "historically informed" times in which we now live? ... Well, here it is for today's audience to decide! ...

Also recently put onto YouTube, Stokowski introduces the World Premiere of "Incantation" - a jointly composed work for 'Tapesichord' by Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky. I doubt if it was ever heard again ...

From the same uploader comes the only collaboration ever between Heifetz and Stokowski. Their 1934 78s of the Sibelius Violin Concerto was unapproved by Heifetz at the time, evidently due to balance problems. Why these weren't sorted out before they began recording isn't clear but with the solo viola louder than the solo violin in the first movement, one can soon hear why Heifetz objected. His own set of test pressings eventually made it to CD, so here is their sole joint enterprise in a faultily balanced performance ....

'CRQ Editions' marked Stoki's 140th Birthday by releasing an all-French, all-stereo, all-live compendium, which ends with a stunning Ravel "Bolero" ....
