Had a great grandson born in England last Friday. It's a boy. The bris (circumcision ceremony) is this Friday. The blessing of this will outweigh everything else in time, but I have to wonder.

Have some roof damage. Roofer thought State Farm would spring for a new rough. Nope just a $1500 repair which is less than my deductible. Of course.

I made the mistake of letting my grandson order a stroller and having it shipped to us (desired color wasn't available in the UK). I said sure, we would would bring it to England or Israel with us, depending on where they were when the baby was born. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The bigger of the two boxes is bigger (only by a few inches) than Iceland Air's maximum. Haven't been able to get through to them to ask about an exception.

One alternative is to unbox it, set it up and check it just like parents with babies do. Of course we are not traveling with a baby so it will cost. Also it will probably not look new the first time they use it. Another is to just ship it as is with some shipper. Tried to get an estimate for that but they didn't answer. This is what I think we will do. Just too hard for my wife to manage it.

I bought to Tickets last Friday to attend the bris but got sick two days layer. Massive congestion, coughing, headache. I haven't been tested for you know what. But I may have bronchitis or pneumonia starting. Hopefully not. Anyway I am no condition to travel to England so had to cancel my ticket. Refund? Nope? Credit? Maybe if I send Orbitz a doctor's note saying I shouldn't travel.

Finished venting.

Congratulations on your great-grandson! Sad to hear that you can't attend the ceremony. Pneumonia is an illness you don't want to have as a great-grandfather. Let's hope it's not going to be that bad.

Wish you a speedy recovery,
Henk

You don't need no exception! Assemble the stroller
and rent a baby to accompany you on your trip. As
you probably know already, kids under 2 yo travel
free if they don't need a separate seat.

Thought of that. And kidnapping. Rejected both.

Frank, hope you're better soon.

May your tribe increase -- and it just did!

Dang, pram is a shorter word than stroller, but doesn't change the size of the box...

It's short for perambulator and they used to look just a little smaller than Betty Draper's car:

This is what I think we will do. Just too hard for my wife to manage it.

Maybe if I send Orbitz a doctor's note saying I shouldn't travel.

It was. Sadly, Mr Cooper is no longer with us, the actor Robert Morse having just died at the age of 90, receiving glowing obituaries on both sides of the Atlantic. Here is the vehicle in question:

I've just watched an excellent documentary about Missoura farm boy and fashion designer Jeremy Scott. It reminded me that, unlike the advertising business, an ambitious and attractive young woman in the fashion industry is unlikely to climb the ladder of success by sleeping with the boss ...

The Bettymobile wasn't quite long enough to have a bowling alley in the back as per Eartha Kitt's requirements, but you will note that the rear seat splits and the two halves can be relocated to fit longitudinally along the sides of the vehicle. You could fit The Chordettes in there:

<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rYoRaxgOE0&t=2s>

And yes, the final episodes were a cop-out, especially when they married off the heroine to that drip of a designer or what ever he was. They should have taken a tip from The Sopranos and had several aggrieved husbands taking the elevator up to Don Draper's Miami hotel suite, carrying baseball bats .....

I loved the contemporary hit records at the end of each episode too. I have nostalgia at one remove for that era in America.

Since I started this thread, I thought I would follow up.

Thanks for the congratulations on the birth of my great grand son (who has no name until he is named Friday at the Bris).

No bronchitis, no pneumonia, chest-xray clear. Got some good meds from a clinic and am feeling better. Wife left tonight for England.

Concluding the stroller story. Decided to put together the bassinet attachment (and send or bring the rest later) and have my wife check the stroller with the bassinet attached. After wrestling with the instructions which had no words just tiny pictures that meant nothing to me, I just figured it out, mounted it on the stroller and realized the stroller doesn't fold with the bassinet attached. Duh. Took it apart, stuffed all the parts into a big suitcase, lifted the suitcase onto the stroller and voila. My 4'10 wife with two artificial knees and one hip had no trouble pushing it. Friend took her to the airport and she took off on time. In the air now.

Luck has changed, as it usually does. But not always. The friend who took wife to the airport is a retired Army nurse, two tours in Iraq, suffers from PTSD, had a bowel resection because of cancer, now being treated for a recurrence of lung cancer. Oh, he is also recovering from a nasty divorce and his kids hate him. But he is somehow dealing with it, thanks in part to an amazing service dog.

We should all count our blessings.

May I suggest the following alternative for future use:

(a) Ask American store for discarded box of pram requested
(b) Put wife on plane with box
(c) Wife buys replica of pram requested in London
(d) Grandson in law transports box to Stamford Hill.

As Charedis tend to go for big families, this may save you a great deal of time and trouble in future ...

Better: When someone asks me to schlep something big from the U.S. to elsewhere, because they can't get the color of their choice there, say "choose a different color."

This is what I think we will do. Just too hard for my wife to manage it.

Duh. Took it apart, stuffed all the parts into a big suitcase, lifted the suitcase onto the stroller and voila. My 4'10 wife with two artificial knees and one hip had no trouble pushing it. I was discussing the issue of prams with my wife, who originally lived in a coal-mining town in West Yorkshire. It was a fairly rough place, but young mothers would insist on having a huge pram for their babies, indeed my wife and brother-in-law were wheeled about in one themselves. It was not unknown for prams in blue-collar areas to be left outside in a porch or shed because they were too big to get through the front door of the house.

Box does not fit on plane! Not
to mention if the pram can be
purchased in London, its box
should also be available there.

I have a more effective approach.

When we moved to the US, I flew
in first to find a house, furniture
and buy a car. I then flew back
to Tel-Aviv to fetch my family.

In those days, airlines allowed
strollers on board when a baby
was traveling. I had the stroller,
but the baby was in Tel-Aviv. I
flew back to Tel-Aviv on TWA
flight 800.

For those who do not know or
remember, flight 800 was TWA's
round the globe flight, from SFO
to JFK to CDG to TLV to HKG to
SFO.

When I boarded the flight in SFO
I asked to take the pram on board
saying my wife and the baby were
going to join at JFK.

I changed planes at JFK and asked
again to take the stroller on board
as my wife and the baby would
join in Paris.

In Paris I ran into a nosy French
gate attendant who said I could
not take the pram on board as
there was no baby. I pretended
to not understand French, acted
like a dumb American, and asked
to speak to the station chief. That
did it -- they let me take the pram
on board!

I also travelled with 8 suitcases:
2 matched sets of 22/24/26/29
nested within one another!

Box no longer contains pram, so box can be collapsed for ease of transportation.
It probably has to be the American box. It may not be the American brand.
As previously reported, the Stamford Hill / South Tottenham area of Norf Landon can be a little rough in spots, so the British model with an armour-plated hood and slots for a machine-gun may be advisable.

The real issue is whether the box
can be restored to its original
shape after being collapsed.

I wouldn't bet on it.

Apologies, Frank, although you have to admit the situation is innately comic. There's enough there for an entire episode of 'Seinfeld' for a start. On the other hand, we can all see that it has caused your wife and yourself a great deal of stress, with which we genuinely sympathise, especially given your age and medical problems.

Sincerely,

Correction: the rear seat doesn't split and fold back. The machine is so damn long it doesn't need to. The Chordette seats fold up from the floor.

Congratulations on the birth of your great grandson.

I hope you weren't intending to bring back an unexploded bomb from the
Golan Heights as a souvenir perhaps using the stroller to transport it.
