Too bad. I'm amazed that I have not a single recording by him. Seems like every time I considered buying one of his recordings some reviewer or other panned it or said someone else was better and scared me off. Is there anything like a consensus about what his best recordings might be?

Don't know about consensus, but I do like his version of the second Prokofiev concerto.

Hah. I just read an Amazon reviewer who said the 2nd was the weak link in the set.

The reviewer is a Krainev, Kitajenko fan - completely different approaches.

I played several concerts with him (2nd bassoon) when he was a soloist with
the Indiana University South Bend Orchestra. They were all amazing
experiences for me. Besides being a wonderful musician he was a very
gracious person and treated the orchestra musicians with great respect. The
one concert that really stands out for me was a performance of the Ravel
Concerto in G. He was just phenomenal.

Wow! Having suffered through some heart failure myself (as I was about
to go onto a tennis court), I can understand why someone would keep
playing. Lots of doubts pass through your mind: Is this a heart
attack, or a stomach ailment? Minutes are important as heart tissue
begins dying quickly. RIP Maestro Toradze.

Glad you survived it. I am a survivor of an angioplasty and stent (hardly the same thing as a heart attack, but according to my cardiologist I was probably not far away from one). I take a blood thinner, blood pressure medicine and feel fine. But as my cardiologist friend (friend?) keeps telling me, stress tests are poor predictors of heart attacks. So who knows? My lack of regular exercise is worrisome, but I can't seem to will myself to do it. Heck, my brain tumor (lipoma) will probably kill me first. Last Saturday I fell (no reason other than a spooky loss of balance) and bruised my ribs. That's because the lipoma has damaged my balance (and my hearing in one ear). In the 20 years since it got diagnosed, I have fallen for no apparent reason around 5 times, usually without injury. OTOH, had I had surgery to remove it 20 years ago, the possibility of death on the operating table or inadvertent damage to one or more facial nerves was not negligible (the surgeon estimated 5%). I'm don't really know if surgical procedures to address this kind of thing have improved much in 20 years, but surgery could still be an option. Health report over.

He performed with the Vancouver (WA) Symphony 6 weeks or so ago, playing
the Shostakovich 1st Concerto, and had to go to the local hospital with
heart issues, so I guess this is not surprising. I did not hear him, but
everything I heard said he was an excellent and a delight to work with.
