The cellist in this recording is not that good but quite acceptable.

That makes it easy to concentrate on what Shostakovich did with the
orchestral accompaniment. Fascinating for me. I wish more composers
would take such liberties with uninterestingly scored works of the
standard repertory. It beats the horrors that contemporary stage
directors do with classic operas while the music directors insist on
HIP performances as close to the original as posssible.

Why bother ?!? Whatever one composer
thinks about another composer's music,
skills and orchestrations is completely
besides the point. Just as pointless as
rewriting Hamlet or Macbeth from a
different perspective. Works of art
are not (or at least should not be
considered as) lego sets.
