Thanks. I'll be sure to check it out. I must say much of his work (e.g. Schubert, Beethoven sonatas) strikes me as bloodless.

Same feeling here. And I have "done the work" of giving Lewis the benefit of the doubt. I hold this opinion in large part due to his Beethoven sonatas recordings from ~12 years ago. But if Howie says so, I shall endeavor to give Lewis another audition, this time in late Brahms, some of my favorite Romantic works for solo piano.

In other news, I just read that Peter Donohoe has recorded the complete Lyric Pieces by Grieg and that Chandos has recently issued the first volume.

Very good Waldstein in that Beethoven.

His duet recordings with Steven Osborne on Hyperion are very fine, especially the French Duets CD. I say that admitting to be far more of an Osborne fan. His latest Rachmaninov CD with the Sonata #1 has become my favorite recording of that work.

Osborne is an excellent pianist and musician. Will investigate the Rach CD to which you refer.

Why do you guys link Lewis and Osborne together?

Which of Osborne's four Rachmaninov CD's (one is part-Medtner) would you
guys recommend as a first selection? (Berkshire has them all in stock,
but only if you spell the composer's name that way.)

I would recommend starting with the Preludes, then the Etudes-Tableaux, then the Sonatas.

Thanks. I plan to order his Debussy Preludes, so this would allow me to
catch up to an Osborne recital I attended about 15 or so years ago,
consisting of blocks of Debussy and Rachmaninov Preludes. (At the time
I was not sufficiently attuned to these Debussy works - much better now,
but still not perfect; I was much impressed with his Rachmaninov.)
