Well, it was Shaw who opined that the German Requiem was music that
"could be "patiently borne only by a corpse." But the piece really bears
little resemblance to a requiem in the orthodox sense of the word. FWIW,
I think Shaw went overboard.

who could hear as well as most write!

I agree with both - my favourites in listening so far are Szell who is excellent, and Talich who is elegant and haunting.

Ancerl and Kubelik take the dances too fast and in doing so miss the heart of the music. Dorati is better.

For a really good live performance from a most unlikely source, and which shows more energy and enthusiasm than any of the above, here's a Slovenian Youth Orchestra doing their Christmas concert and putting heart and soul into it! Quite something!
