Some of his positions are consistent with Libertarian views (legalizing drugs, e.g.) and others aren't (national health insurance). Few people adhere 100% to the positions of the ideology with which they self-identify. Just as we can argue about a definition for Jewishness we can argue about this. I'd say the most useful identifier for a person's politics is how he actually votes.

Not to mention the fact that he is an entertainer. Some entertainers shy away from political commentary for fear of hurting their careers. Others base their careers on political commentary and humor. For them, it seems they have to be a outrageous as possible to maintain their audience. Half the time I'm not sure they believe what they are saying. Of course, that goes for politicians also. While not entertainers per say, they have to cater to their audience. Which is different during primary season than election season.

Do you think Reagan's politics had more in common with Trump's politics or with Biden's politics? Since it is clear that Maher voted Biden, you might figure out the answer to the 1st question yourself.
