I just archived a radio special I did five years ago, "Unreleased Gems of the '50s." You'll find it at https://www.mixcloud.com/dean-fiora/unreleased-gems-of-the-50s/

Here's the playlist:

First attempted in 1956 but perfected at a January 1957 session at Sun this is probably reckoned to be his greatest unreleased recording. Certainly voters in the Unreleased Battle ten years ago thought so--enough to crown it Champion of that epic battle

Here's how it won that contest :-

R1
>12 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun -- 1957
> 1 The Cadets -- Let's Rock And Roll -- Modern – 1956

R2
> 1 Sammy Lewis -- Gonna Leave You Baby -- Sun -- 1955
>13 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun – 1957

R3
>14 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun -- 1957
> 3 Papa Lightfoot -- Jump The Boogie -- Imperial – 1954

R4
> 4 Slim Harpo -- Wild About My Baby -- Excello -- 1960
>13 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun – 1957

R5
> 3 The El Dorados -- She Don't Run Around -- Vee Jay -- 1955
>14 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun – 1957

R6
> 5 Percy Mayfield -- Gone Astray -- Specialty -- 1954
>13 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun – 1957

QUARTER FINAL
>12 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun -- 1957
> 7 Elmore James -- Madison Blues -- Chess -- 1960

SEMI FINAL
> 6 Professor Longhair -- Ball The Wall -- Atlantic – 1953
>12 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun – 1957

GRAND FINAL
>14 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun -- 1957
> 6 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954

> 2. THREE THIRTY THREE, Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters (1953)

Carl's final opponent in that legendary battle was recorded October 24 1954 (Clyde McPhatter's last session with the group).First released on the LP "Their Greatest Recordings-The Early Years" in 1971

Here's their track record in the Unreleased Battle

R1
> 1 Lowell Fulson -- It's A Long Time -- Checker -- 1956
>13 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954

R2
>12 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954
> 2 The El Cincos -- Oh Baby You Have To Go -- Vee Jay – 1958

R3
>17 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954
> 0 Henry Gray -- I Declare That Ain't Right -- Chess – 1953

R4
>16 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954
> 1 The Spiders -- Better Be On My Way -- Imperial – 1956

R5
> 1 Clifton Chenier -- I'm On My Way -- Specialty -- 1955
>16 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic – 1954

R6
>15 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954
> 3 The Du Droppers -- Bam Balam -- RCA – 1953

QUARTER FINAL
>6 Hal Paige & His Wailers -- Rock The Joint This Morning -- Paradise -- 1955
>13 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic – 1954

SEMI FINAL
> 4 Fats Domino -- Don't Know What's Wrong -- Imperial -- 1956
>14 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954

GRAND FINAL
>14 Carl Perkins -- Put Your Cat Clothes On -- Sun -- 1957
> 6 The Drifters -- Three Thirty Three -- Atlantic -- 1954

> 5. HARBOR LIGHTS, Elvis Presley (1954)

From his legendary July 5 1954 first session proper at Sun

> 7. BOP WITH ME BABY, Rosco Gordon (1956)

First released on a special Sun 45rpm pressing in 1976

> 8. ROCK THERAPY, The Johnny Burnette Trio (1957)

One of the greatest tracks still left in the can when it came to compiling the "Tear It Up" LP in 1969

> 10. LOVE’S ALL I’M PUTTING DOWN, The Spiders (1954)

They had some great unreleased tracks but IMO none better than this one. Recorded March 11 1954

> 11. ROCK THE JOINT THIS MORNING, Hal Paige (1955)

Thanks go to Diane for her nomination of this for the Unreleased Battle---one of my very favorites in the contest

> 20. MILKSHAKE MADEMOISELLE, Jerry Lee Lewis (1958)

One of the best unreleased JLL tracks recorded January 1958 (same session as "Down The Line"). Unreleased until 1974 (first appearance on a French compilation)

>> 35. HE’S THE FAT MAN, The Hawks (1954)

One of my favorite tracks on the Steve La Vere produced 1968 LP "End Of An Era : Rhythm & Blues Vol. 1" compilation released on Imperial (in US) and Liberty (in UK) in 1968. What a terrific collection that was!

> 36. BOP PILLS, Macy Skipper (1957)

Apparently Brad Suggs supervised this one off Skipper session with Sun (and played on it too).
