JO STAFFORD (Capitol 57-665)

"Homework" (2:57)
"Just One Way To Say I Love You" (3:01)

More great wax from the hit “Miss Liberty” musical production, with chirp Jo Stafford
offering “Homework” and “I Love You.” Both tunes are definitely among the best the
show has to offer, and should be among the most played in no time at all. Jo’s rendition
of “Homework,” a terrific ballad loaded with a ton of smart lyrics is top notch throughout.
It’s the type of tune you wanna listen to time and again. On the flip with “I Love You,”
the Starlighters back Jo, as she purrs the lilting refrain to this comely ballad. Ditty is a
winner—especially so for the romance kiddies. Ops can’t miss with this disk.

SARAH VAUGHAN (Columbia 38512)

"While You Are Gone" (3:08)
"Tonight I Shall Sleep" (3:20)

The great Sarah Vaughan, one of the nation’s foremost song stylists, comes up with a pair
here that should find a top spot on music ops machines from Maine to California. The gal’s
tremendous vocal range is easily demonstrated on these sides in beautiful, clear vocal strains
that make for wonderful listening pleasure. Top deck is a deeply fetching item that makes you
stop and listen. Sarah’s wonderful dramatic ability is brought to light all the more on this platter.
The flip keeps in the same mood and tempo, and has the lass turning in another brilliant vocal
performance. Orchestral accompaniment on the pair by maestro Joe Lipman rounds out the
biscuit in top manner. Ops should climb on the bandwagon with this one.

PEGGY LEE (Capitol 57-670)

"You Can Have Him" (2:53)
"At The Cafe Rendezvous" (2:50)

More wax from the “Miss Liberty” click with thrush Peggy Lee serving up “You Can Have Him.”
Peggy picks up the tempo on this bright ballad, and with the Dave Barbour ork backing, turns
it into a mellow hunk of shellac. The gal’s pipes pitch pretty throughout. The flip, from the
Warner Bros, flicker “It’s A Great Feeling” is a slowly etched piece that makes you stop and
listen. Tender, romantic lyrics with a taint of French about them add to the pleasure of the
platter. Take note of some great guitar work by Maestro Barbour on the side. We go for the
top deck.

RACE DISK O’ THE WEEK

"FRANTIC" FAY THOMAS (Exclusive 109X)

"I Don't Want Your Money, Honey" (2:44)
"Waga-Waga" (2:15)

One of the most frantic of frantic gals in the most outstanding sides ever yet cut comes
“Frantic” Fay Thomas to bring a brand new individual style to the juke boxes of the nation
with, “I Don’t Want Your Money Honey,” a surefire clickeroo if ever there was one. Just
listen to this gal skim thru the 88’s and gurgle, chuckle, giggle and sing and make more
sounds than you’ve heard in a month of Sundays. This is one side you can lay your cabbage
on right now that it’ll pay off, but big. On the flip, with a side we believe that’s just as good,
and even more frantic than the topside comes “Waga-Waga,” with Fay simply beatin’ the
beat to teeney weeney pieces. Here’s a disk that has nickels, dimes and quarters pressed
right into it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIG JAY McNEELEY (Exclusive 108X)

"Hoppin' With Hunter" (2:28)
"Tondalayo" (2:45)

You’ve heard Big Jay go ’way out and gone and come grindin’ right back again,
but, until you hear Jay on “Hoppin’ With Hunter” you’ve never heard him really
let go and simply bust that beat wide open—but wide. Here’s a side that’ll have
’em jumpin’ anywhere in the land. On the flip, “Tondalayo,” Big Jay and his crew
tear into an island sort of jump beat tune that’s really different and give their all.

EARL JACKSON ORCH. (Supreme 1527)

"Take Out The Squeal" (2:54)
"If I Had One" (2:40)

With Luther Luper to do the hot vocal, Earl Jackson and his orchestra simply tear
into, “Take Out The Squeal (If You Want A Meal)” and turn it into one of the most
frantic cuttings yet produced. The boys are gone on this tune. And on the flip, “If
I Had One,” with Walter Roberts to shout the blues vocal, Maestro Jackson and his
gang once again tear into a tune that reads do-re-me for juke boxes.

CECIL GANT (Bullet 300)

"I Hate To Say Goodbye" (2:38)
"My Little Baby" (2:29)

Here comes Cecil Gant with two tunes that have all the earmarks of a winning disk.
Opening the topside with, “I Hate To Say Goodbye,” in slow tempo, Cecil shows his
voice and his marvelous piano artistry to perfection. It’s a grand cutting. On the flip,
“My Little Baby,” Cecil speeds the tempo, gets plenty of heat and beat into the melody,
and turns out a tune that’ll win him plenty applause.

DINAH WASHINGTON (Mercury 8148)

"Long John Blues" (2:45)
"Baby Get Lost" (2:50)

Favorite of many a juke box listener from coast to coast, Dinah Washington cuts a side here
that’s gonna win her plenty listening attention, “Long John Blues,” which is all about her dentist
who's over seven feet tall.” Grab yourself a listen to Dinah singing the lyrics. On the flip, “Baby
Get Lost,” Dinah speeds the beat and lets go with those grand pipes of hers to make this side
well worth listening to.

SKIP HALL BAND (Jamboree 1001)

"Two Left Feet" (2:20)
"Skip A Page" (2:30)

Introducing Maestro Skip Hall in a speedy, driving, terrific instrumental with all the
hand clappin’ beat and heat ever heard and the boys in his band simply gone on the
topside cutting, “Two Left Feet.” On the flip, Maestro Hall cuts into a softer, smoother
vein, but, doesn’t lose that heated beat when he gives with, “Skip A Page.” Here’s a
disk with plenty of possibilities.

PAUL WILLIAMS' HUCKLEBUCKERS (Savoy 702)

"House Rocker" (2:22)
"He Knows How To Hucklebuck" (2:37)

That man Paul Williams back again with that hot, hot beat in a new, terrific hunk
of instrumental wax, “House Rocker,” and, take it from us, he rocks ’em with this
speedy spinning side. It’s got just about everything a Paul Williams’ fan can ask
for. And on the flip, a follow-up to his terrific sensation, “He Knows How To Huck-
lebuck,” with Joan Shaw to do the vocal and lift the tune right off the turntable.

DOC POMUS (Derby 712)

"Kiss My Wrist" (2:12)
"Traveling Doc" (2:22)

Doc Pomus cuts loose on “Kiss My Wrist” in speedy tempo to produce a side here
that’s sure to tear many a dollar bill into nickels just to hear him do it over again.
This is topside for our coin and one side that’s gonna grab play. On the flip, “Trav-
eling Doc,” Pomus goes away out and blue in a shouting vocal saying his goodbye
to Brooklyn. Listen in to this wax.

Agreed, but, as is often the case with R&B of this era, 90+% of the
allure is found in the very good instrumentation, not the vocal.
Doc Pomus here is just some slightly hoarse singer delivering
repetitious hollering with very little melody in the mix.
