THE CASH BOX DISK OF THE WEEK

PERRY COMO (RCA Victor 20-5950; 47-5950)

"(There’s No Place Like) HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS" [Roncom ASCAP—R. Allen, Stillman]
“SILK STOCKINGS” [Chappell ASCAP—Porter]

One of the record biz’ most consistent hit makers, Perry Como, comes up with a new release
that’ll earn a bundle of loot for all concerned with it. It’s a great new song called “(There’s
No Place Like Home For The Holidays,” a tune which fits perfectly into this pre-Christmas
season. The song is not specifically a Christmas tune but is, rather, a song that applies to any
holiday season. The tune has a great set of lyrics and a beautiful, catchy, and easily remembered
melody, all set to bounce tempo. If this one hits and we can’t see how it can miss you’ll be
hearing it before every holiday, of every year. It’s just gotta be a big standard. The coupling
is another beautiful composition, the title tune from the next Cole Porter musical “Silk Stockings.”
This big production treatment has standard qualities too. Ops and dealers have a safe investment
in 20/47-5950.

DEAN MARTIN & NAT "KING" COLE (Capitol 2985; F-2985)

“LONG LONG AGO” (2:22) [Marvin ASCAP—Fisher, Alfred]
"OPEN UP THE DOG HOUSE” (2:25) [Marvin ASCAP—Fisher, Alfred]

Dean Martin and Nat “King” Cole, who need no introduction to the music trade, team up for the
first time to form what looks and sounds like a winning combination. To prove their ability as a
team, they dish up two wonderful novelties that oughta be doing big things on the charts. One
end is the great oldie “Long Long Ago.” New lyrics are added and the results are great. The boys
work as though they’ve been a team for years. Billy May sets up a sock backdrop. The coupling
“Open Up The Dog House” is another comedy item with a good bounce. Very funny lyrics tied in
with a great beat. Both ends have the dollar sign stamped all over them.

THE FONTANE SISTERS (Dot 15265; 45-15265)

“HEARTS OF STONE” [Regent BMI—Ray, Jackson]
“BLESS YOUR HEART” [Bregman-Voceo & Conn ASCAP—Drake, Stride, Enston]

The Fontane Sisters, who came to life in the wax field with their recording of “Happy Days
And Lonely Nights,” have a new platter that can’t miss. It’s a crazy deck that’ll establish the
team as one of the best in the vocal group category. The song is called “Hearts Of Stone” and
was originally an R & B tune. The girls really let loose on this end and belt the number across
in a fashion that’ll have the juke boxes bouncing from morning ’till night. It’s definitely their
best platter to date. A driving number. The coupling, “Bless Your Heart” is a pretty filter handled
smoothly by the trio. The top half is the side to watch. It’s gonna be big.

THE CASH BOX *AWARD O' THE WEEK*

ROY HAMILTON (Epic 9086)

“HURT” (2:07) LMiller ASCAP—Crane, Jacobs]
“STAR OF LOVE” (2:32) [Stratton BMI—Hinkson, Hamilton]

Roy Hamilton has been growing in stature and sales power with each succeeding release, and his
latest, “Hurt,” may be the one to really launch him into the big time. “Hurt” is a slow, dramatic,
sweetly romantic item delivered in that big, but controlled Hamilton voice. The lad has something
in his voice that comes across and hits you where you feel it. Like it for hit sales. The flip, “Star of
Love,” is a similarly easy and dramatic type treatment. The deck shows off Hamilton’s voice to its
best advantage but the general feeling doesn’t seem to have the warmth and sales potential that’s
packed into the 2:07 of “Hurt.”

THE SPIDERS (Imperial 5318)

“21” (2:18) [Commodore—Bartholomew]
“SHE KEEPS ME WONDERING” (2:24) [Commodore—Bartholomew]

The Spiders have a piece of hit material in “21,” their latest wax presentation. A driving
block buster, the tune is also coupled with a strong set of lyrics that shout out the youth’s
excitement at having reached his majority, “21”. When the lads take a breather, the ork
carries on with a wild instrumental break. The flip, “She Keeps Me Wondering,” is a slow
rhythmic pretty, in which the boys move over to center and offer a treatment that seems
aimed at the pop market. “21” all the way.

LITTLE WALTER (Checker 805)

“LAST NIGHT” (2:43) [Arc BMI—W. Jacobs]
“MELLOW DOWN EASY” (2:45) [Arc BMI—W. Dixon]

Little Walter, still strong with “You’d Better Watch Yourself,” is presented with two potent decks
as follow-ups. “Last Night” is a slow tempo dirge like blues bemoaning the loss of his best friend.
Sorrowful tone is kept thruout as Walter wails his downhearted story to a simple accompaniment.
The flip, “Mellow Down Easy,” is a change of pace. A rhythmic jump that comes out an infectious
piece of wax. Tempo and mood is one of excitement and Walter turns out an- other top notch job.
Two solid pieces of wax fare for the trade.

WILD BILL DAVIS TRIO (Okeh 4-7047)

“THINGS AIN’T WHAT THEY USED TO BE” (Parts 1 and 2) [Ellington, Persons]
The Wild Bill Davis Trio comes up sporting the beaty oldie. Davis’ smart organing is well
supported by the group with a strong solo effort on the guitar. Two sided jazz flavored
wax that is very palatable.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOBBY LESTER and the Moonlighters (Checker 806)

“SO ALL ALONE” (2:45) [Arc BMI—Fuqua, Lester]
Bobby Lester and the Moonlighters blend well to perform the rhythmic middle tempo
blues. A fair etching that offers good entertainment.

“SHOO DOO-BE DOO” (2:45) [Arc BMI—Fuqua, Freed]
This deck could make it. Tune is exciting and delivery is excellent. The lads knock out
the rhythmic bouncer strong appeal to both the r & b and pop markets. It’s the type
of materials that has hit big via Chords, Crewcuts, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE WRENS (Rama 157)

“BEGGIN’ FOR LOVE” (3:00) [Love Music—Concepcion]
The Wrens sing a pretty blues ballad with slow tempo. Lads work smoothly and
softly but etching falls into the acceptable but routine class.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHmLIDJVfmw

“LOVE’S SOMETHING THAT’S MADE FOR TWO” (2:15) [Jaga —Mansfield]
The boys get off on a rhythmic kick on the flip and the sound is good, happy and
infectious. Good dance item for the “cat” kids. Like it and enough exposure could
get the ditty on the move.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE “5” WILLOWS (Herald 442)

“LOOK ME IN THE EYES” (2:28) [Monument BMI—Singleton, McCoy]
The “5” Willows etch a slow blues pretty in strong fashion. The lads are plaintive
and tender in a true r & b flavor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOhgsmbSJsw

“SO HELP ME” (2:22) [Danby BMI—Singleton, McCoy]
The boys rock out for a change of pace and the result is tasty. Stimulating and a
teasing foot tapper.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARTHUR GUNTER (Excello 2047)

“BABY LET’S PLAY HOUSE” (2:40)
Arthur Gunter sings to small band accompaniment and etches a middle tempo jump blues
with potent effect. Good r & b wax. This one could break for the top of the chart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF-HkpAB_z4

“BLUES AFTER HOURS” (2:29)
Gunter’s pairing is a southern slow blues effectively per- formed. Gunter portrays the dejected
and rejected man.
