LIONEL HAMPTON ORCH. (Decca 27325)

"MERRY CHRISTMAS, BABY" (3:19)
"BOOGIE WOOGIE SANTA CLAUS" (2:41)

Two Xmas numbers that'll melt the snow are served up by Lionel Hampton and the orchestra.
Both of them have driving vocals by Sonny Parker and of course they both feature Hampton
in first rate instrumentals. Ops who have the locations for some real gone music should
latch onto this.

SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

GUY MITCHELL (Columbia 39067)

"MY HEART CRIES FOR YOU" (2:45)
"THE ROVING KIND" (2:45)

Guy Mitchell breaks into the upper circles with a disk on which it's impossible to choose between the sides. Tagged "My Heart Cries For You" and "The Roving Kind," both ends of this waxing offer a unique listening experience and mark Guy as a guy that all ops have to watch carefully. The top deck is a nostalgic ballad with an unusual melody that lingers long after you've heard the record. With lyrics
in a folk tune style, this one will hit the top in no time at all and probably be one of those ditties
you hear year after year. The chorus and orchestra under Mitch Miller's direction line up behind Guy
and give him the kind of support that makes this an unbeatable side from every angle. Flip is a rousing novelty in nautical terms which will also wear white in the boxes. It gets a great big happy going over from Guy and the chorus and can't help but make juke box fans nut another nickel in. These two sides are natural for ops. Wait until you hear them!

PEGGY LEE (Capitol 1298)

"WHERE ARE YOU?" (3:15)
"AY AY CHUG A CHUG" (3:14)

Peggy Lee has a new ballad on which she goes to town in her usual forthright manner. Backed up by Dave
Barbour's orchestra, which includes some fine guitar work, Peggy makes this tune sound as though it has
great potential. Lower half is a Mexican novelty which she does so well. Both sides offer good listening and will do fine by music ops.

*AWARD O' THE WEEK*

THE SHADOWS (Sittin' In 583)

"JITTERBUG SPECIAL" (2:45)
"I'LL NEVER, NEVER LET YOU GO" (2:54)

The Shadows have a couple of sides here that'll set rhythm fans rocking. Labeled "Jitterbug Special"
and "I'll Never, Never Let You Go", both ends of this disk are due to make a big splash in the juke
boxes. The top deck is a driving, hard hitting jump number that offers some of the grandest harmony
we've yet heard. Making like a choo choo, the boys let go with everything and turn in a terrifically
smooth job. Flip is a ballad which they make easy to listen to. A solo highlights the side, while
the rest of the boys join in for some equally wonderful harmonizing. This disk has everything an op
can want. Better get with it fast.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BILL MARTIN ORCH. (Coral 65041)

"EVENIN"' (2:46)
"HEY' LUCINDA" (2:50)

A couple of blues numbers are offered here by Bill Martin and the orchestra. On the upper deck,
Mary Reed sings out a slow ballad, while on the lower half Bill Martin himself does a little
shouting. Both sides make for good listening and they deserve music ops' attention.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRANK CULLEY ORCH. (Atlantic 922)

"LITTLE MISS BLUES" (2:57)
"GONE AFTER HOURS" (3:01)

Frank Culley and the orchestra push Arlene "Little Miss" Talley into the forefront in a loud hitting
blues item on the top level. Flip has a piano solo by Van Walls who comes up with a terrific instrumental. His hammering piano is something to hear. Ops should listen in.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AL HIBBLER (Atlantic 925)

"OLD FOLKS" (2:47)
"THE BLUES CAME FALLING DOWN" (2:54)

An appealing old ballad, sung in a pleasant voice by Al Hibbler, makes this a worthwhile upper half
for ops. Second side is a low-down blues number on which Billy Taylor's orchestra provides a good
instrumental, and Al turns in a first-rate vocal. Ops will want to get with this one.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HUBERT ROBINSON (Jade 206)

"GAS HAPPY BLUES" (2:35)
"HARD LOVIN' DADDY" (2:54)

A couple of shouting vocals by Hubert Robinson and His Yardbirds to the accompaniment of
some interesting instrumentals are dished up on this disk. Both ends tell a sad, sad story,
but it all sounds well in the end. This one is one for ops with the right locations.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CECIL GANT (Decca 48185)

"IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME AGAIN" (2:49)
"HELLO, SANTA CLAUS" (2:55)

Two more entries in the Xmas sweepstakes are shown here by Cecil Gant. Top deck is a slow
ballad on which Cecil does a pleasant job. Lower lid is a shouting welcome to Santa, with a lot
of good piano to help him in. Cecil Gant always puts on a good show and this one's no exception.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE RAVENS (Columbia 39050)

"TIME TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING" (2:59)
"DON'T LOOK NOW" (2:15)

The Ravens have a couple of wonderful sides here which should bring those nickels into the
machines. Top deck is a slow blues thing in which Rickey does a solo in a low, low voice. Flip
is a faster tempo and offers some first-rate harmony by the boys. Both sides are naturals for
ops.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WINI BROWN (Columbia 39041)

"A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND" (2:40)
"THIS IS THE LAST TIME" (2:30)

A standard ditty is rendered on this disk by Wini Brown in a very winning style. Singing with
a lowdown voice and talking half the song, she makes this item very listenable. Lower deck
is a rhythmic tune done in a similarly assured manner. Ops ought to hear this girl.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TINY BROWN (Capitol 1305)

"GOOD LOOKIN' FELLOW" (2:10)
"MERRY-GO-ROUND BLUES"

Tiny Brown puts her husky voice to work on a couple of items here, and does a neat job.
Both ends sing out the blues and lower lid in particular has a terrific piano background.
It certainly helps drive home the point. Ops will be in the driver's seat with this.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BULLSEYE OF THE WEEK

RAMBLIN' JIMMIE DOLAN (Capitol 1302)

"R. F. D. BLUES" (2:37)
"I'LL MAKE BELIEVE" (2:46)

Ramblin' Jimmie Dolan turns in a first rate performance on a number called "R. F. D. Blues". This side
is gonna have music ops listening to the sound of jingling nickels for some time to come. Going through
a pounding blues theme, Jimmie renders the catchy lyrics in an excellent voice. The instrumental backing
brings out all the melody in the song and makes it very easy to take. As a matter of fact, it's sure to have western fans taking it over and over again. Lower lid is a ballad on which Jimmie also gives a good account of himself. Although it makes for pleasant listening, it doesn't have the sensational quality the first side has. Ops will want to get going with this one in a hurry.
