Samp wrote a monthly overview for every month through December 1950, then dropped it.

He still hasn't been back now. I'm thinking that it had become too much to have to keep writing reviews once or twice a day every day, and that he stuck it out until he finished 1952 and then stopped. Maybe it's a long break to get rejuvenated, or maybe he'll never start back up. Time will tell.

I wouldn't blame Sampson if he quit. From the beginning, I thought this was too ambitious a project for one person to take on.

I hope he didn't quit, though. I haven't always agreed with Sampson's reviews, but they're well thought out.

Norm's early rules for this newsgroup disapproved of this type of
response, but nevertheless,

I totally agree, Dean.

I'm pretty sure he's no longer alive. He was in bad shape from
Parkinson's disease last time I talked to him, and that was probably 10
years ago. I don't know. It was in "the before times."

Yeah, I called him a few times the past few years, and although I was
able to leave a message, he never responded. And also, like Diane says,
the last time I did talk to him maybe 5 years ago, he was in bad shape
and seemed very week.

The one and only time I ever spoke to Norm directly was a half hour long call with him when I was in Val Shively's store in the late 90's.

Sincere condolences

some related trivia, got for free :)

In 1950, aged 4-5, Norm resided in Gardena, Los Angeles with:

Hilda R Katuna 35 (mother; nee Lefkowitz; 1914-1994)

Phillip A Katuna 30 (father; 1919-2004; last address, since
1997, was West Palm Beach FL)

Jeffrey Katuna 1 (brother; b. Nov 1948, a licenced vet since 1977;
since 1985 or before he has lived in NH or MA {ie a long way from
brother Norm}; 'Jeffrey Was Katuna' is a multi-millionaire and his one
child 'Neil Phillip Katuna' went to Milton Academy, south of Boston);
70th Birthday Celebration at his Vet Clinic {does he look like Norm?}:
https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=201329147418124 ;
a web page dated 2024 shows Jeffrey to be a current (yes, at 75)
specialist vet at the Boston Veterinary Clinic (which has 5 locations)
Norm did not have any other siblings (just Jeffrey).

Norman Katuna married Mary Marlane Gray on Sep 15, 1973 in Las Vegas
NV; they divorced Mar 23, 1983 in San Diego CA; no children.

Norm's grand-parents on mother's side were born in Austria-Hungary;
Jacob Lefkowitz (1872-1948) married Nettie Stern (1876-1944) and had
13 children between 1897 and 1923, all born in Wilkes-Barre PA;
Norm's mom/mum Hilda was #10 in 1914:
https://ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow/Families/Silberstein.html

Norm's grand-parents on father's side were also both born in
Austria-Hungary; Israel Katuna (1878-1958) married Lena Katz
(1887-1962) and had 8 children between 1907 and 1926 in Wilkes-Barre
PA; Norm's pop/dad Phillip was #6 in 1919. Isreal Katuna was the
proprietor of Western Feed Company in Wilkes-Barre. Lena Katz
was a keen Orthodox Jew (a member of the Holche Yosher Ahavas Achim
Synagogue).

Without paying a subscription, I so far can't find anything more about
Norm's father, Phillip - such as when he moved to the West Coast from
PA, and what career(s) he had.

"Katuna" is a rare surname world-wide. Said to be of Russian origin.

I first met Norm when he was driving for the PO, I guess in the 90’s,
and was delivering a truckload of mail to one of the San Diego offices
that was being reviewed by me and our team. The Manager knew about both
Norm’s and my affinity for old music, so introduced us. We obviously had
a great commonality, and he invited me over to his place. Wow !! He had
45’s in virtually every nook and cranny in his apartment. We talked
periodically on the phone, and as many of you know, he was very
knowledgeable about music, though he did have some peculiar tastes. LOL.

His signature on his posts had 3 records that he had in his collection.
I'm sure us old timers here remember that.

RIP buddy.
