I grew up with a Bechstein grand. Nice piano but I prefer a Steinway.

Gieseking played a Bechstein. Don't know who else.

Before WWII Bechsteins were quite popular among top
classical pianists. Lipatti, Schnabel, Gieseking, Harold
Samuel, Haskil and others can be seen playing (well,
actuyally sitting in front of) Bechstein grands. WWII
dealt a blow to the Bechstein company from which
it never quite recovered.

Debussy favoured the Bechstein and Cassard has recorded the preludes on
one made around 1900.

Rachmaninoff played Bechsteins for his European concerts until 1928. Come to think of it, it is likely that the Schubert Sonata he recorded with Kreisler in Berlin was made on a Bechstein. And Jorge Bolet played Bechsteins in Europe through through the 70s and early 1980s. His Chopin/Godowsky Etudes/Waltzes and the first three of his Decca/London Liszt series were made on a Bechstein in London. In the US, he played a special Bechstein from around 1979 to 1982 during the time Baldwin handled Bechstein in the US. The recording of both Liszt concertos he made for Vox with David Zinman and the Rochester Philharmonic was made on a Bechstein and, in fact, that Bechstein stayed in Rochester, having been bought by the Eastman School. It's probably still there.

He played on a Baldwin with the Rhode Island Philharmonic on the
occasion I saw him there (in the 70s).

If memory serves, the Baldwin sound was
similar to the Bechstein sound. Perhaps a
tad warmer. Baldwin's weaknesses were
the actions and the fact they could not
stay in tune long enough for a 2 hour
recital.

I have a multi-disc set of Moravec recordings. For those recorded in NY
he used a Baldwin and its sound is execrable. The others were recorded
in Europe on a "favourite" of yours, a Steinway, which had a vastly
superior sound.

Any instrument can sound execrable if not
properly tuned, voiced and regulated, not
to mention recorded well.

In general I prefer instruments with a rounder,
mellower sound and more even top to bottom
timbre than many (most?) Steinways I heard
or played. This does not mean all Steinways
are inferior to all Bechsteins, or viceversa.

And here is a great sounding Blüthner:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMv-p1WPMNw

The typical Blüthner sound is/was even
warmer and mellower than Bechstein's.
Ideal for Schumann and brahms. The
actions however tend/ed to be less
responsive than Bechstein's.
