I flew to Munich especially to hear this.
It was well worth the trip 10 times over.

Hopefully you had a chance to see the city(one of my favorite) as well. Schwabing - the college area - is especially vibrant and fun. Randy

I've been to Munich many times. It is one
of my favorite cities as well. I would move
there in a second if I could find a job there.

FWIW my favorite cities are Singapore,
Vancouver, Munich, Shanghai and Hong
Kong. I also like London and Amsterdam
for their cultural and musical life, however I
wouldn't be able to live there permanently.

Thanks for this, Dan - I shall watch it with interest, if only as another Dave-baiting exercise. Watching Rattle conducting Bartok is bad enough, but *Celi* ...

There is of course the question of which orchestration is used. IMHO less is more. The Naxos recording uses a reconstruction of the original version, with violas divisi, cellos divisi, solo violin and organ. Two movements added later have been re-orchestrated for the same resources. It is sung in the French pronunciation of Church Latin, which was still in use at the time: "Et leeks pear pay too-ah ..." etc. I will soon add a recording of the reconstructed 1893 version, possibly Herrweghe.

My daughter went to Munich on her honeymoon and got very drunk. The result is my grandson.

Thanks for your attention. I am skeptical
the emotional experience Celi generated
in the Gasteig can be captured, let alone
revealed in a recording. I had tickets for
both Thursday and Friday evenings. I was
lucky to have enough handkerchiefs in my
pockets to prevent my new business suit
from being drenched in tears. AFAIK Celi
never made a studio recording, all his
performances were designed for live
audiences in real concert halls.

Getting drunk is exceedinglly easy in Munich,
especially during Oktoberfest! ;-)

Musical performance seemed for Celi to be a collective, liberating and enlightening experience for all involved, or so I've just read, connected with his exploration of Zen. There is of course a recording of that performance of Faur'e, as well as a 'Celibedache: The Munich Collection' set of 49 CDs.

That is when she went, and she is usually abstemious ... Meanwhile, I'm going to buy the 1893 version of the Faur'e from Les Siecles and Ensemble Aedes. Herreweghe permits rubato in the Pie Jesu, which I do not like at all. We also get La Figure Humaine (Poulenc) and three chansons by Debussy.

The set is called 'Celibedache: the Munich Years'. You can get both the Requiem and the set from Presto Music.

I permit rubato anywhere, everywhere,
anytime -- Jesu or no Jesu. As one of
my favs likes to say, "le rubato c'est
la musique". Smash and burn all
the metronomes! ;-)

OT, but I cannot help mentioning that I heard the work (for chorus and
organ) in a liturgical setting this morning. A lady from my church died
a few days ago, and there was a Solemn High Mass (Dominican Rite)
celebrated for her. The choir was Cantores in Ecclesia of Portland, OR,
and the organist was the estimable Mark Williams, in town as Music
Director for the William Byrd Festival. When my time comes, I hope to
have such a funeral.

Did you hear Celi live?

There is no way to refrain from drinking in public
during Oktoberfest. The smallest pitchers are 1L.
Declining to slurp immediately marks one as a
stranger, and possibly a spy.

One annoying aspect of Oktoberfest is that one
must drive very carefully at night, as there is the
risk of pedestrians falling suddenly under the
wheels of one's car. Been there, done that,
not planning to repeat.
