His Shostakovich 4th s/Philly on DG is pretty awesome IMO.

It's good, but not great. Ormandy's Shostakovich 4 in Philly was superior, although it's still a treat to hear the orchestra as they were when Sawallisch restored some of its former lushness and character. (The current version of the orchestra under YNS sounds dreadfully underpowered and anonymous.) There are much better Shostakovich 4s: Lazarev, Inoue, Rattle (his EMI recording as well as the two BPO videos), Rozhdestvensky (the live recordings, not the studio Melodiya), Kondrashin (with the Concertgebouw), Simonov, et al.

Returning to the OP, Chung is OK, but not great. I have many of his recordings and have heard him live on several occasions. He has a Beethoven cycle from Tokyo that is solid. His later Seoul PO recordings made a minor stir about a decade ago, but I never could figure out why. They're proficient, but nothing memorable or revelatory. I suppose that sums up Chung's artistry on the podium.

Still, I'd rate him above nearly anybody helming any of the major American orchestras today.

I've read that DG was planning a Shostakovich cycle with Chung, but cancelled it when the 4th turned out so monumentally boring.

Evidently I do. I own 18 complete cycles and three partial ones that are scheduled to be completed in the near future.

He is a better conductor than I am.

It seems to me his best recordings are some of those with the Bastille Opera Orchestra. His Berlioz and Dvorak are pretty good, IMO. Most of the rest is forgettable. In fact, I've forgotten it. I enjoyed his disc of Nielsen Sym 2 and the Aladdin Suite. That might have been a Dave's Fave recommendation.
