Weingartner's Grosse Fugue comes to mind. Bernstein recorded Op 131 and
135 with the Vienna Philharmonic.

I never understood the need for these arrangements.

The problem your quote starts with is that of a piano reduction of the string quartets.

"In any event, while the content may all be there, the piano reduction falls far short of the string original in presenting the sustained notes, differentiating the textures and conveying the gripping sense of tense exertion."

If people just play the string quartets as they were meant: as string quartets, there is no problem.

I like that set, although it might be the only integral one of string orchestra arrangements of late Beethoven quartets, though. Weingartner and Bernstein were already mentioned. There is a live recording of Mitropoulos conducting his own arrangement of Op. 131 (Bernstein also used this arrangement in his own recording, but the liner notes did not acknowledge this as I recall.) There are also recordings of Furtwängler conducting the "Cavatina" from Op. 130 and of Toscanini conducting the two inner movements (in reverse order) of Op. 135.

Thank You! Do you have any preferences in these arrangements?
Maybe only 4 instruments doesn't offer that many possibilities... but
you never know.

I know these quartets very well, I own 4-5 different complete sets,
etc. I was just curious about hearing this great music in a
different form.

You mean favorite recordings? If so, I'm not sure. Hard for me to choose out of all the ones listed because they're each so distinct. If you mean arrangements, I'm only familiar with the ones listed by myself and others in this thread, as well as the four-hand piano ones. I've heard a couple of the latter in live performances (opp. 127 and 132) and like them for the way they lay out Beethoven's harmonic and contrapuntal ingenuity in black and white. There may be recordings of those four-hand arrangements, but if so I'm not familiar with them.
