It comes as quite a surprise to find that an orchestral arrangement by Elgar, lasting about 18 minutes and published in 1902, has never yet had a commercial recording. He must have been inspired by the "Prelude and Liebestod" from Wagner's "Tristan" to do the same thing with the beginning and ending of "Gerontius."

We do have a single-sided acoustic 78 from 1917 on which Elgar recorded a mere 4-and-a-half-minutes abridgement but it's astonishing that in the last 120 years no-one has bothered to record the complete score. I wonder if this YouTube upload of the old 78 might inspire some enterprising conductor finally to give us the World Premiere recording of Elgar's arrangement, unabridged and in luxurious non-acoustic sonics ...

Of course they do, but the OP is looking for a purely orchestral version recorded as such, like the many purely orchestral versions of the Tristan P&L played on their own. Just as an extraction from a complete Tristan does not qualify, neither does an extraction from a complete Gerontius.

Christopher Howell is quite right. None of the links provided take us to the complete, non-vocal orchestral arrangement which was published in 1902. I'm aware of the versions for piano and for organ, so they don't fit the bill. Nor does Mark Elder's recording where he splits the arrangement into two separate parts and hires a quite unnecessary mezzo for the "Farewell." Two or three videos simply edit together the Prelude and the Farewell from televised transmissions, such as the one featuring Janet Baker conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. So, like I say, the composer's purely orchestral arrangement, notwithstanding his 1917 single-sided 78rpm extract, still awaits a World Premiere recording!

Sounds like an idea I once had. All I needed was the technical knowledge and some capital, neither of which I had.

It's only about 18 minutes of music, right? What would be the filler for a CD release?

4 other composer(s), contrasting style

I'd be tempted to take option 4 and create an extended 56 min version of Nyman's in re Don Giovanni...

I was thinking other unrecorded works or now that I think of it, maybe just some never-on-CD recordings.

The odds are that, if someone decides to do it, it will be a filler for one of the symphonies, leaving you to decide whether it's desirable enough to duplicate the symphony for the sake of 18 minutes that aren't all that different from the complete Gerontius(es) you presumably have

Klaus Heymann the owner of NAXOS used to contribute to this group, I
wonder if he is still reading it and will put the idea into practice?
