No Berman. That's why I bought the CD of Chamayou. I already had the two Bermans. I would not call young Chamayou's playing tame, unless that is your definition of leaving notes and phrases some breathing room.

Thanks for the links in your other post. Berman is great, Kissin tries too hard to be Richter and Richter has one major drawback: of being Richter (just as Argerich has the drawback of being Argerich).

PRESTO FURIOSO does not call for or allow for breathing
room. The whole point of it the work is to evoke a WILD
CHASE. Chamayou plays it as if it were nothing more
than a salon piece.

You have a point. Chamayou is a brilliant, but rather unfussy performer. I prefer his approach to an emotionally involved one - if the emotions conveyed are primarily those of the performer.

I always admired Richter as a pianist with huge capacities. Years later it occurred to me that I was never really swept off my feet by any of his playing except maybe for a Scriabin recital from Moscow conservatory from the 1950s. I never knew how to put into words what it was about him that never appealed to me.

That changed when a thread was initiated here about 12 years ago about great Chopin playing. One of the frequent participants back then said that Richter reminded him of a huge Russian tank running over a beautiful garden. Bingo – that expressed exactly why Richter’s playing never did much for me. It’s just too overbearing for my tastes. It’s always too tightly wound for me. I never really felt the capacity to be tranquil in him. Not that I expected tranquility all the time. But this lack ruins a piece like Cesar Franck’s Prelude, Choral and Fugue or the four Ballades of Chopin. His filmed performance of the Chopin Etude op. 10 #4 is awesome for sheer super-speed and power, yet the after taste left is - “so what”? On the other hand his disposition works better for Prokofiev and Beethoven, although I prefer others even for these composers. So each to his own.
