I understood that the Smetana had done only one *complete* Beethoven set. It was recorded in the 70s into the early 80s, and I have it on Denon CDs. I always understood this to be a digital (DDD) recording -- even the ones done in the 1970s, being pioneering digital efforts.

Now I see that the reissue of the set, or what I take to be the same set, on Supraphon CDs, is marked on the box "Remastered from original analogue master tapes" and labeled AAD.

Anybody know what's up?

I have a supraphon box with the late LvB quartets, starting with op 95.
All these quartets (with one exception) had been recorded in the 1960s.
The op 131 had been recorded in June 1970.
There is no way any of these recordings could have been pioneering digital, and that's good news. Early digital did not sound too great, generally.
My supraphon archive box is marked ADD and the remasterings are from 2006.

I have that box as well, and in addition two further discs on Supraphon
out of Denon; the first, labeled 'Crest 1000' contains Op. 59/3 and Op.
18/1, recorded 1962 and 1961 respectively. The second, labeled 'Denon
Classics Best More 50' contains Op. 127 and Op. 131, recorded 1971 and
1970 respectively. The Op. 131 is the same as the one in the Supraphon
Archiv box; the Op. 127 is different. I think they are all superior to
the digital set.
